I'm undertaking a project for a new employer who, encouragingly, has a really strong growth plan.

Part of this project is to recruit heavily and ordinarily I can find people easily through a bit of digging, but this Company is in a niche engineering market with a very software orientated offering which forms the basis of the business. Very much into wind energy and EV/hybrid vehicle drivetrain solutions.

I can flood the trade presses with 'look how great we are articles' and hit the grad recruitment and trade fairs plus I can pull on an internal network for recommendations but I don't think these will get us enough people through the door. They are agency averse and would prefer to self source...

So anyone got any ideas I can pinch - if they are transferrable to the global market even better.

Really appreciate any input on this...

All the best

No quick win - but market mapping and networking is one way to get your name known. Trade press, journals, events listings, conference speaker listings etc are all a good place to start.

Company Website
Trade press
Linked In
cheapy web adds on "specialist website"
Pay a researcher to "map the market" but headhunt yourself. (£300 a day)

Grads is one thing - experienced hire is totally different.

You say you're not looking for agencies, but this is right up Escargot's street - might be worth a chat even if nothing comes of it.

Thanks for the input folks - at least I wasn't going off my rocker with my thought processes...

When the time comes I'll drop Escargot a line - we're not at the stage yet where we need to look but it'll be coming in the next few months...

I know, I know - not exactly what petrolheads want to hear, but they do work for the motorsport industry too. And in any case, Harriet Harman - a man can really take offence at such slurs smile

DC, I understand companies can be agency averse but it may be worth having a chat at some point, I can be very flexible in terms of the way we structure fees to ensure it works out more cost effective than doing direct advertising yourself both from a time and financial point of view.

The offer of a chat is there anyway, even if you just want to run some of your ideas past me. smile

Network network network.

Every expert you hire will likely know a couple of people who would be interested, and boffins being as they are will almost certainly not even think of mentioning it. Pull this information out of them - sometimes a referal bonus helps too, a hundred quid for introducing a succesful candidate.

Also, look at a broad range of backgrounds. It sounds like a very specialist technology, but what other sort of backgrounds would bring useful skills and experience to that sort of application? This can open up a whole range of new and often very good candidates.

Where are you based?
What salaries are you offering?
What level of guys are you looking for?

I know 3 softies/systems guys. Two have just done the Redundancy thing, one could be interested if worthwhile. All experienced, properly trained and good. And I dont mean IT/telecomms/Java/"website developers" good, I mean actually good engineers.
