Hi,

I'm just wondering if there are any QS on PH. I've been accepted on a QS grad scheme but wanted to know a bit more about the 'industry' with some possible first hand examples.

It wasn't the job role I applied for or studied at University, however I was offered this role after my assesment centre.

I have done the usual research on Google, journals and having spoken with a Retired Civil Eng friend of mine but am really after some first hand knowledge of what the job typically involves, career progression etc from anyone in the field.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance smile

PM me, ideally with details of your academic background & where you're going to be working.

PM me if you want, or just ask some specifics here.

There are a few of us, I've worked in retail, commercial prop, O&G and my next job is Nuclear, so it's quite varied.

The consultancy I work for are laying off QS's in our birmingham, leeds, edinburgh, glasgow, manchester and london office this month. It seem the graduates, trainee and assistants are going first.

The industry is a long way off recovery unfortunately.

ClaphamGT3 and Mattt --> Message sent smile Thanks

GSP - wow I did not realise it was so bad. The locations you mentioned have a very close resemblance to where the company I will be working for is based...

Apart from the current conditions, what would you say about the work in general? How long do you estimate before things improve?

Thanks for all the help so far!

Most of the big consultancies have offices in the same major cities.

F&G, T&T, Gleeds etc

As for the market picking up, some argue it already is but the partners are skimming profits off for them self and building a nest egg... because in another 10 years there WILL be another recession, history shows this.

On the other hand lots of people are saying it will be another couple of years before things are back to normal.

The company I work for forced everyone to take a 12.5% pay cut just over 1 year ago. The business unit I work for made 50% profit but we still got nothing back. The company targets included an overall 20% profit... but end of year they claimed a 0.1% loss which in real terms meant a 19.9% profit, but most people dont know all the facts.

Basically the whole industry is still struggling, far from being back to normal.

If you are good you will get and keep your job. If your dead wood you'll be in the dole queue.
