Management qualifications - distance learning

Has anyone gained any recognised generic management qualifications by distance learning that they could recommend (qualification and/or provider)? I'm not up to an MBA timewise or financially, so I'm not after anything quite that advanced, just something that I can pick at of an evening/weekend that will(eventually) get me something that I could use when applying for jobs.

How about an Open University foundation degree in management?

Cheers that looks like a possibility, though it does look like it could take quite a while to do.

How long a course are you looking to do, what's your budget and does need it need to be industry-specific?

Ideally a year or less. Budget probably no more than a grand (it'll be coming out of the general household budget). Doesn't need to be industry specific - ideally I wouldn't want that anyway as I'm looking for something to use to increase my options.

Also, can anyone say what the difference is between "Leadership" and "Management" qualifications are and how they are viewed by potential employers?

I just thought I'd add - I'm not in a management role, never have been in any official capacity - and a work-based project would be tough as I wouldn't get support from my employer.

I've noticed that there's something called a BTEC Diploma in Leadership (or they do one in Management). Has anyone heard of these qualifications and would they be taken seriously by an employer?

I did a hnc business management at the local uni 2 nights per week..Cost 700 quid per year...

2 more years and it becomes a degree..

The open university is good but studying with other people is a lot more motivating..

I am about to study a distance learning programme in management at warwick university. done the research and appears one of the best courses around....recommend.

Can't remember the source, but I once read something which said, "managers are trained, leaders are born". I think it meant that with management, you can direct activity, make decisions, add value, etc, but with leadership, it's about making others great and getting them to opt-in to following you. And of course you don't need to be a manager to be a good leader.

That's true. Unfortunately all of the management/supervisory level positions I've seen have wanted people with direct experience of managing staff, something I'm not able to get until I'm in a management/supervisory post. I'm hoping some sort of management qualification might substitute.

if you want some of the best free management and leadership training then just join one of the reserve forces as an officer ...a year or 2 doing weekends and weekly evenings you will learn a damn site more than a college course

there is a slight downside to that though.....
