Decontamination manager?

I have been told of a job that may suit me, the description is simply a Decontamination manager, can anyone tell me anything about this. I believe it is a NHS post something to do with autoclaves and operating theatres. I need to know more before I apply, any help would be appreciated as the agency seem to know nothing.

What sort of decontamination. Could be dog st, could be plutonium.

Different skill sets.

You could be right, but when i spoke to the agency they asked about what i have done in the past and when i said i was or had been in charge of "nuclear and bilogical decontamination teams in the RN" she seemed quite impressed.

80 staff would indicate to me its one of those 'off site' decon supercentres who sterilize the instruments etc for a variety of Hospitals and is not based in one Hospital.

Sounds a lot more exciting than washing bits of tissue from surgical instruments and putting them in a big dishwasher / sterilizer (!) I am sure you will have 'minions' to do that if you're going to be the manager.

An autoclave is just a big steam cleaner - high temp for short duration.

Its no bloody wonder the NHS is in the state its in if they can pay 50k for a "head of washing up" I will feel guilty all the way to the bank if i get the job.....

For all the joking its actually a pretty serious job hence the salary - imagine if there is a cross infection and a patient dies or no one notices an instrument is missing when it comes back in for cleaning and its been left in a patient.... There's also a ton of legislation to know inside out and comply with and managing a team of people who just wash instruments all day on minimum wage will be interesting.

From my experience within the NHS, those on 40k upwards spend most of the day in various meetings. Basically you get paid top whack to sit around a table all day and occassionally update the odd policy and procedures

dentistry wise i belive there is going to be a decontamintaion person per surgery, so presume you'll manage them aswell as hosptial and other pct sectors. its the next new big thing to be bought in (waste money)
its a ball ache job due to the cross infection controls and health and safty, everything is done by the book mess up and your fooked.


everything has to be cleaned, decontaminated, inspected to make sure its clean, cleaned again, dated, then after some many day's and the instruments are not used you have to repeat the same process again.

i'm going to presume you'll be going around your area inspecting doctors/dentist surgerys, hospitals etc to make sure people are doing there job proply. and if they have a problem/ or having a day off you will need to sort the problem, find a replacement to take there place etc..
