Courier job while I'm retraining?

Does anyone know the pros and cons of being a self employed courier? I'm retraining to get my Gas qualifications up to date and need a job in the meantime. Ideally smaller loads as I'll be using an estate car at first.
There seem to be lots of sites offering the chance to bid for shipments, has anyone any experience of these?
Is there another place I should be looking for this kind of work?
