After 14 years working 9-5 and paying thousands in Income tax & NI I am leaving my job in August and I intend to claim every ebenfit I am entitled to.

How soon after leaving can I claim my jobseekers allowance?

i was made redundant with immediate effect on a friday, i put my claim in when i sobered up on monday went to the jobcenter on thrusday that week to complete the paper work, and was signing on the week after

If you leave volentarily then you have to state the reason for leaving and they then decide if you can claim.

You wont be able to claim (what was) unemployment benefit, but you will be able to claim (what was) social security benefit: and the amount is not far short.

On this topic, does anyone know what my dad should be getting paid? He has been made redundant and is looking for work but obviously he has a house and wife to keep (well she is keeping him actually)

They told me I may not be able to get JSA , you do get asked about the situation with leaving and then they decide from there, you would be able to apply for a reconsideration if it goes against you.

If she works more than 16 hours a week, he'll get £64.30 a week for 6 months, then nothing after that. Thats what happened when my old man was made redundant after 20 years of employment. My mum worked 20 hours a week, but they both had to live on that. ended up having to sell the house and downgrade just to keep supporting themselves.

Will just have to see what they say. I was told it can take up to two weeks from signing up to decide.

so let me get this straight. you worked for 14 years easily enough time to build a little nest egg and have now decided you want to go back to school but you want everyone else to pay you whilst you do?

Full time education? So how does that fit in with the Job Seekers contract in which you agree to show evidence that you are looking for 40 hours per week employment? You can't, unless you are economical as to your plans.

As for applying, telephone asap. They won't backdate it, but they will start it from the day you make the phone call. You might also be able to apply for Housing Benefit if you rent, Council Tax benefit and Child Benefit if you have a child. They are separate applications and you need to as for forms to make those applications asap as well. "They" say they might backdate it, but unless you have been in a coma, it isn't going to happen!
