My wife has been asked to extend her notice period at work from 1 month notice to 3 months. She's not very keen on doing this as she's having thoughts about moving on in the next 6 months and 3 months notice is a huge hassle.

Her job is secure (as it can be these days) so that's not really a concern but they want her to accept a 3 month notice period for their own benefit.

Is it therefore acceptable for her to refuse this change to her contract? Should she ask for something to 'compensate' for this inconvenience?

I wouldn't accept a 3 month notice period. Are the company offering 3 months notice from their side too?

No chance. Ask for something in compensation and then say it's not enough if you wish, but I would be extremely reluctant to increase my notice period - presumably the company have a reason for asking for it. And it goes double considering she's thinking of leaving.

Before you leap into rejecting this, just remember that the 3 months notice works both ways.

i.e if they want to make her redundant that'll be 3 months notice instead of 1.....

How flexible on it are they likely to be if she wants to leave?
What level is she?

A lot of companies put it in for higher level employees but are open to a deal should the employee wish to leave.
It's also not uncommon for higher level positions to expect this of prospective candidates.

She's Operations Manager and the 3 month notice will benefit her but she's very well regarded and there is little chance of her losing her job.

This benefit to her doesn't out-weigh the inconvenience of working a 3 month notice.

It's unlikely that they'd let her go early, the only reason for extending it is because they've just realised the consequences if she did leave.

Thank you for all your advice. My Wife has spoken to HR about this and persuaded them that it's unfair to extend her notice period.
