C+I Technician in the Power Generation Industry

I know there's is a lot of engineering types on this forum and like me a lot of you will share your love of automotive engineering with that of a different industry.
I am an apprentice at a 2000MW co-fired coal/biomass station learning to be a control and instrumentation technician (yes, not engineer one day I may be afforded the oppurtunity to remedy that who knows?). When I come out of 'my time', have to love the way they make it sound like prison, I will have all the usuals NVQ3, HNC etc and not very much experience. The latter being my major worry as the company is going through a lot of changes and at the moment I feel it unlikely I will get taken on. Now I have a huge passion for anything engineering, the bigger the better in my book, and would not want to leave the sector. I have my sights set on working in generation.
I was wondering if anyone with any knowledge could afford me their experience in the sector and maybe give me some advice on where to go next if I don't manage to gain a permanent position there.
