Hay guide help
Discussion
Hello I know this is prob in the wrong forum but I could do with some help quickly.
I have a friend who has a pay review coming up on Monday but thinks he may be getting the raw end of the deal, his company are using the Hay Guide points system to grade his pay but may be pulling points in order to stop a pay rise happening. Would anyone know where I can get hold of a copy of the points/grade chart for him, I am not exactly sure what I am asking for but from my understanding it is table which shows how many points equate to each grade and then ultimately how much pay said company will allot to each grade?
Like I said any help appreciated

I was trained in Hay grading 6 or 7 years ago.
To be honest I've forgotten most of it.
But the tables and charts won't necessarily help, there's quite a lot of theory behind it all. -Doesn't work like an instruction manual.
I'm afraid that I've seen various grading sessions both Hay and the newer NHS system which came in. And the truth is that 3 people who have an overiding agenda of not paying someone too much, with a few 'groupthink' dynamics will score a job as they wish, (within limits).
My only advice would be to ensure that the 'graders' have the best possible understanding of your mate's job with his job description written with the following topics in mind:
Know How
• Technical Knowledge
• Management Breadth
• Human Relations Skills
Problem Solving
• Thinking Environment
• Thinking Challenge
Accountability
• Freedom to Act
• Magnitude
• Impact

Thanks for all you help, I will pass it on, do you know if there is a set amount of points per grade or is down to the individual employer as to how they interpret the the system and decide how many points are required to each each grade?
Thanks again
Paul
Hay's own scale does have specific bandings, yes. However, the Hay scale contains too many gradations to be a practical grade structure in most workplaces. Thanks again
Paul
Most employers typically start with the jobs ranked on the Hay scale, and then determine internal gradings/job bandings from there, which are bespoke to them.
