Getting knocked back....Eugh

Hey guys and girls.

I recently went for a job interview working for a company dealing with high-market tools and construction material. It was dealing with sales within wider markets but more importantly there were great internal opportunities. There were 3 stages to the application process, and I fell after the third interview stage, there were 11 who applied and it went down to 2.

Im currently in employment, and when I found out the news this morning I was just gutted. Im now sat in work and it feels terrible.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation?

The worst part about it, is not neccessarily finding out the news, but being so close to a change that going back to what your used to is just not acceptable.

Basically, I spoke to the HR team, and they said the other candidate had more 'relevant' experience, you were still 'very successful but it was a close decision'.

I appreciate they will be interested in the other candidate however the feeling of failure still remains.

Tough luck there, but it does sounds as though you did well to get that far.

Reality is, you can't win them all!

Don't beat yourself up.

The g/f was made redundant last year and had lots of this sort of comment.

Landed a job for much more money than many she had been knocked back for with hugely more job satisfaction available and even better, in her field, it is a very prestigious job.

Stick at it, and don't tell the boss you are looking around!

it hurts, but it hurts a whole lot more when a recruiter is the one that means you lose the job...

I had jumped through all the hoops and performed all their tests and came up trumps and then on the last interview (5 of 5) I got told that they wouldnt consider me as I was too expensive for the experience...

I was left bemused and a little dejected until I heard that the recruiter was trying to bump up her commission by putting me in at 30% more than I had suggested, this was the sole reason for the rejection, plus to make matters worse she refused to contact them to tell her it was her mistake and to be reconsidered at my original rate... bh!!

Bad luck. I would leave your number and ask them to get back in touch if a similar position comes up. Try and leave it with the hiring manager as well if possible, as HR are often doing lots of things, where as the manager who interviewed you will remember a good candidate.

And don't be too downhearted! There's plenty more out there.


Dupont: Did you contact the company directly? Sounds like a right fk up by the agency, especially not going back to correct it. If you're still interested it would be worth a go even 9 months on.

They couldnt take my call as the rules that they have with the agency mean they would be in breach of it and I would have to wait 6 months.

Im now back in the industry I love, getting contractor rates for something that will see my reputation rise in the industry sector (in essence make a name for myself), though I would liked to have the oppotunity to travel eurpoe and Asia which that job would have afforded me.

Ive never heard of commission based recruitment! Wow what a joke. What is the field exactly that you are in?

Just been through something similar so I know exactly how you feel.

Applied for a role that I is really interesting and a bit of a stretch for me. 3 interviews, last one with CEO, lots of positive vibes then a knock-back with very little feedback. It was an IT role through an agent so lack of feedback is pretty much the norm unfortunately. It really is quite painful to get so close, but fail at the last hurdle. You can't help but think what you could have done differently..

However onwards and upwards as they say, it is a big world out there.

Given how it happened I'd be very surprised if any agency could or would enforce that, and at very worst they would be able to bill the reduced fee based on the salary you accept.

Better yet wait until a year has passed and I'm pretty sure the introduction is finished.

say it was a £50k job the agent takes 20% = £10k fee
now up it 30% to £65k the agent takes 20% = £13k fee, so she now gets the little bit more.

Yeah its kind of a pain. Today has to be the worst day at work so far, in a way I think its because this is the first time ive been declined after an interview. So in a way I wish I had failed one earlier in life so I can prepare for the horrible feeling.
