Startup , permy or contractor
Discussion
Hi Guys,
Newbie here but have been reading the forums for about a year.
I'm looking for your opinions and personal experiences.
I'm currently a contractor on a good rate, I hold a EU passport and came to the UK 15 months ago for my actual position, I'm 30 old, married, no kids, no assets, OH will be doing a master degree that will last a year.
I work in Telecommunications and there is a strong believe that the company will move operations to Eastern Europe.
I have been to a series of interviews lately and the prospect employer should be making a decision this week or the next, this company is a startup, with them my take home pay would be halved.
This is the scenario:
1.-Current employer renews my contract at the end of this month for 3 months more and will probably offer permy position.
2.- Current employer decides to not renew.
3.- Prospect employer makes an offer.
4.- 1 and 3 together.
What will you do in the case of 4?
Bear in mind that I probably won't be able to get another contract like this in the UK and that the startup can always fail. As the OH will need to be here I am not planning to go abroad even if the current employer makes an offer.
Any input is appreciated.

What's the start up offering to compensate for halving your salary?
If they're a well funded, highly organised outfit with a sensible business plan, and you'll be getting a good percentage in share options then it might be worth it. Or alternatively if the work is cutting edge or interesting, and something you'd like to get involved in then that's another consideration.
But if they're offering the same job for much less money then I'd say it's not worth your time. There is no job security with these sorts of companies.

They are still small, they are within their business plan and in their words they are very close to making their first sales, if they make it, it will open other opportunities as they are tackling a big customer. This I believe as the product is already on the final demo stages.
It's a new solution to a common problem but with a better approach, It will involve lots of hours of work/testing/research/travel/etc.
I have not been offered anything yet, is just one possibility and I am assuming that my salary would be halved based on what my colleagues make as permies on my current company.
I've been told that my current contract has good probabilities of being extended for 6 months more. But, I am intrigued with the startup as the risk/return could pay off, although what puts me off is that this could take years or just never happen, what will you do?
Thanks for the answer.
