Advice on finding a job

I'm a bit stuck with my job hunt as to what kind of jobs I should be looking at and would appreciate any advice.

After graduating in 2007 with a maths degree I started to work in a software house in the city. My role there was a cross between a business analyst role and database support. I developed my SQL independently and was quite good but a bit rusty now. I worked there for a year before leaving on maternity leave after which I was made redundant. Since then I've had part time jobs to fit in around childcare but now am desperate to find a 'proper' job.

At the moment I have been looking at graduate IT roles or any graduate role that is requires a numerical degree. I would ideally like something more technical as I particularly liked the scripting side of my previous job but being honest I am completely open (and capable) of almost anything (other than sales).

With my experience and qualifications what kind of areas should I be looking to work in and what kind of roles should I look for?

On a more serious note what about consulting or working for yourself? Are you experienced enough?

Thanks for the replies. I really want a job as I need the social aspect of a job and strange as it may sound, I really miss the commute.
