Personal mobile numbers

Dunno whether I should have posted this in S P & L but here goes. We have a bombastic Ops manager in our transport business. The work done by the section I work in (as an administrator, liaising between clients and their customers) is handled by self-employed drivers. This 'ere manager has decided that if a delivery is unsuccessful (our drivers already leave calling cards with the telephone number of the office that customers can call for us to arrange redeliveries) he wants the drivers' mobile numbers passed to the customers. Easy matter for the drivers, for if I was still on the road I would be saying "sorry mate, that is my personal number and no-one is having it unless I say so". But I feel that if said manager wants us to give out a driver's number, would we not be breaking some sort of law regarding data protection? I personally will be refusing to do so without more clarification.

He has backed down and said he meant only the drivers would be asked to give their numbers but of course could decline; also I told him no way would I be giving them out to anyone at all....Is it not reasonable to expect a self employed driver to have a "business" number? These drivers are after all in business in their own right and not disguised employees are they not?
If I was your boss and drivers didn't play ball then I would just look for contract drivers who did. Simple.

Good point, but this thread was started because we were initially told that we would have to give out someone's telephone number. And even if a driver has a business mobile, it is still not on to divulge it without his say-so.If I was your boss and drivers didn't play ball then I would just look for contract drivers who did.
