Job opportunity for Motorsport Apprentice in Wiltshire

We are looking to expand the workshop and want to take on an Apprentice. We are looking for someone who is aged between 16 and 19 and is looking for a career in motorsport.
We are based on the outskirts of Castle Combe, so you would need to have transport to get to the workshop.
We need someone that has a passion for motorsport, wants to learn and isn't afraid of long hours and hard work!
The successful applicant will be given full training accompanied by college courses to accompany the internal training.
You will gain useful skills in:
Welding
Chassis development
Suspension Design
Fuel systems
Drivetrains

I do agree Ageism is illegal, and forgive me if this remark was completely tongue in cheek, but I only have the budget requirement for a 16-18 year old....so I either continue with this, and give someone leaving school the opportunity of gaining good qualifications and a long term trade in an exciting environment or ditch the idea.

You don't REALLY want an opportunity like the job JontyR is offering as a 2hr drive on a Mon. morning and Fri. evening is not a big enough reason not to go for it.To get my opportunity I was prepared to move 3.5hrs away from my friends and family, not the easiest thing to do but one I knew I had to. I lived in a dank studio flat run by a crazy woman but it was worth doing as it set me up on the road to what I do now!
JontyR sounds like his company is prepared to invest in someone giving them both pratical and theoretical experience, in the current job market this sort of opportunity should be grabbed with both hands.
I'm way too old and experienced otherwise I'd go for it myself as it sounds very interesting start into the motorsport career you seem to want.

Up to a point. No point taking an apprenticeship and declaring bankruptcy because the commute/accommodation costs are significantly more than any income generated.I haven't really wanted to get involved in the debate as to whether someone should up sticks and move or not, as it may come across as biased.

When I was 18 I went to Uni. I had to get a job to support my studies; I wasn't eligible for a grant due to my parents income, but likewise I didn't want to take any money from them. I had to contribute towards my course fees, but it was only just coming in, so that was minimal. Needless to say I was still having to pay rent, food, running a car...etc etc
This opportunity is very similar. It doesn't have the academic slog associated with University (having said that, you don't get to go to the pub at 1 in the afternoon either!), it is 90% practical based. You are required to keep a diary of the work you undertake, this will be in blog style so words and pictures! However unlike at University, you will receive money in return for working and the college time is free, so hopefully you wont come out with a £20,000 debt to your name!
I welcome someone who says now that it isn't for them, as the last thing I want is for someone to turn around in several months and say this isn't for them, usually accompanied by some tatty excuse! We are going to pour a lot of time and effort into the successful candidate, and would like to hope they will stay with us for the foreseeable future!
All I want is a person (male or female there is no discrimination) that is willing to learn, admit when they are stuck and so don't presume, and not be afraid of hard graft! (9-5 job it ain't!)

I assummed you're reason for not taking the job on were because of the distance involved and thought wrongly that a little bit a advice from an 'old hand' would spur you on to take a leap of faith and go for it.

Terribly sorry if my last message came across as arrogant or disgruntled. I am still looking for a similar sort of opportunity, ideally closer to my current location. If nothing comes up, i'll just carry on and complete my college course and go around amateur race series' offering my "spanner monkey" services for no charge, just to gain some experience as I am doing at the moment. And something may come up that way, but aswell, I shall carry on applying to anything that comes up. Jon, I hope you find someone to fill your position and help you take your business/team to greater heights. And If anyone hears of anything around the midlands... hi just writing to ask if this is still up for grabs or have i missed out. i was at college at castle combe last year and am now at university but not enjoying it and would be very very interested in this offer.
il tell you a little bit about myself,
i come form a engineering family in mechanical and motorsport, i have run radical race cars for the past 5 seasons and loved every minute of it. as i have said i have passed the national diploma at castle combe college which is run by wiltshire college, was a very good course.
just wondering what team you are and what you are running.
also there is a slight bad thing about me and that is im 20 but only just haha

Have done a fair amount of servicing in clubman rally teams so am pretty handy with the spanners.
