Overtime & time and a half.
Discussion
Are employers obliged to pay a greater hourly rate if you are asked to work more than your weekly contracted hours?
My colleague thinks he's entitled to overtime pay at time and a half, but I think he's thinking back to the good old days where you got double pay on Sunday and 1.5X for overtime.
Is there a hard and fast rule, or do different employers take different views.
We're in retail and our bosses want us to do more hours over the Christmas period.

Thanks. You've answered my question Tonker. We're not being forced to work extra hours, we've been offered another 10 hrs a week, starting 4th Dec upto 24th Dec. The latest we'll close the shop is 8.00pm on a couple of Thursday's, so it's not a "big ask" as the 'mericans say.
We've always been paid the normal rate for O/T, but our new lad seems to think it should be 1.5X. I'll tell him to stop being so Militant!!
Our Staff Discount (we're in the Wine Trade
) more than makes up for any "hardship" having to work a bit of O/T and the people we work for are a decent bunch too.Cheers.
rates etc. for overtime or 'unsocial' hours working is a contractural matter as is when any additional payments kick in ( e.g. in the NHS part time staff don't get Overtime until they have worked the equivalent of full time hours - which makes 'extra hours' for those staff the chespest means of extra cover as it cheaper than NHS(un)professionals, Overtime or an external agency)
