This company was looking to expand it's operations department and as i was looking for something else I sent my CV. They were looking for an Operations Manager, a Project Manager and 3 Project Engineers. I apply for the Operations Manager role as i thought it suits me best.
First interview goes well, had the vibe and everything, conclusion was that they will put me through the next round of interviews but for the Project Manager job as I don't have any experience with their industry so I have to learn a bit than move up. Fair enough.
Second interview more business orientated, goes well again, guy was please with my skills, experience and all, yay. Looking to hear back from them in 2-3 weeks. OK.
Now, they come back and they offer me the Project Engineer job. I haven't even consider this at the start as this is exactly what I do now, maybe a bit lower. I want move up and use the skills I learned and all the effort I put into developing myslef. The money is 8% better and exactly the same other conditions ( pension, holiday et all ). The new company is much smaller than my current company but seems stable and with good opportunities to grow.
I am really tempted to say 'go back and think again', my current job is safe so I can still look around even if they say no.

you admit you don't know the industry, yet the PM job will involve managing the PE's, who will do.
they like you, but obviously other candidates have brought something extra.
if it were me, i'd take it if i wanted to be in that specific industry. you could hold out for a PM position but will always face the chance that you will be knocked back for the same reasons. better to be inside looking up [with an 8% raise] than the outside looking in.

Agreed, however I would be pushing for more than 8%, assistance towards PM/OM qualifications (if applicable) and a written personal development plan.you admit you don't know the industry, yet the PM job will involve managing the PE's, who will do.

i find it strange as they could of said from the start, you can only hope for PE, that's it. i find quite chicky actually, not even discussing this with me. PM would of been fine, even for that sort of pay increase, ok maybe haggle for a bit more.
sure, i can ask for more money, maybe they'll give me more money, end of the day a considerable bit is how happy i go home, would i go through all the 'being bossed around' as a low level guy again ? probably not unless it's really worth it.

Same thing happend to me, after I qualified, (years ago)had my first job, then saw two jobs at the another company, one same as I did, other diffrent, applied for the diffrent one, told them on the phone I was not interested in the same job as I had as I was young and wanted experience, went to the interview,, and they interviewed me for the job I did not want, got up told them not to waste my time, got the interview expenses and left. Best decission I ever made got the job i wwanted some where else 3 months latter.
