Stuck in a bit of a situation

First of all long time lurker with a small contribution but that's on a different user name. I registered again as I'd rather nobody knew who I was to prevent this getting back to work.

I've been reading through the Jobs & Employment section a great deal lately due to the fact I'm in a bit of a situation myself at the moment and hope'd I would find some advice from what has already been posted but no luck, so sorry if everyone is getting sick of these posts but I really don't know what to do.

I am currently working as an Auto Electrician and have been with my current company for a year and a half and I hate it so much so that the night before I go back to work after my rest days I start to get myself worked. I used to just deal with it but its no way to live your life getting so down over a job. I have been actively seeking work for sometime but my previous experience (which also happens to be the company I served my time with) has limited my experience as has the current company. I really want to get back into installation work but can't find any. Also I haven't ruled out the option of retraining but at 26 and having a family to provide for its looking less like an option unfortunately.

The other major problem is my current company has started the ball rolling to put me through an extra vehicle licence (trying to be vague as to much info can give a lot away sorry) but this would incur me having to sign a 2 year buy out contract which I don't want.

Sorry if this doesn't make much sense been up all night and spent the day at the hospital with my son but really needed to vent this out.

Anyway if you read all that lot thanks and if you have any advice or possible careers ideas they would be gratefully received.

Are you able to expand on what it is you find uncomfortable about your current role? As it stands, being in employment and having your employer invest in you further is normally a positive thing.

Yeah no bother didn't want to go to much in the first post.

I am one of a team of 3 sparkys, one is an apprentice (typical know it all lad tried working with him but he wont listen) and the other is an old bloke worked for the company his whole life served his time with them but is now as he puts it winding down for retirement its still over 10yrs before he can. Seen as he's in wind down he refuses to learn how to use any of the diagnostic equipment or get involved in jobs he's unsure of which leaves me neck deep in it constantly.

The next point is difficult to get across with this being a public forum also its very unprofessional to broadcast things about how the company operates so I'm sorry but I'll have to be very vague. I am expected to turn a blind eye and just ignore certain things which I don't agree with. I was taught throughout my apprenticeship to have very high standards off work which I pride myself in but this doesn't matter to my current employer.

As for the self loving, belittling boss won't go to in depth but over the last year approx. 15 - 20% of the work force have been off for over 2 months one over 9 months with depression and stress related problems.

if they put you through your licences they will obviously be needing you to be doing things other than what your doing now so it could be a whole different working day away from the idiots.

No job will be exactly the same just when I require vehicles testing I will be driving instead of getting one of the labourers give it run out for me. There is no real gain in it for me. Also I really want to be able to further myself and gain promotion on to greater things but this job is very much dead end.

Wherever you work you will be working with people who are different to you. Even if you go self-employed you will be interfacing with suppliers and customers who may have similar traits to those that are challenging you now. We live in a very diverse world and not everyone shares our own values and standards. One of the tests of our maturity and leadership skills is to recognise this and use proven tools to help us along the way. The trick is to turn any situation in to an opportunity and away from being a threat. If your own self belief and high standards set you apart from your collegues then this will eventually be recognised and you could well become indispensable over time. Choice seems to stick it and work at it or move on, potentially into a very similar set of circumstances. Let us know how you get on.
