Is insurance needed for a consultant?
Discussion
Not sure if this is the right section so mods please move if not.
I presume some form of liability insurance is required to be a consultant? Any thing else needed or advised, will be ringing a few insurers but don't want to get stung for some thing i don't need.
I'm looking at doing some Health, Safety and Environmental consulting on the side but want to be covered in case the worst happens.

If you're consulting using a 'protected' title (like doctor, vet, paramedic etc), then you would be wise to have profesional indemnity insurance as already stated if you wish to practice. Some employers make this a condition of employment so that they don't have to shoulder the burden if you, the 'professional', do something wrong. This is to protect you if you are accused of doing something wrong where claims and costs can be massive. If you're not, then you only need to consider insuring (protecting) yourself against possible threats that you may encounter during the course of your business. This could be occupational, environmental or reputational. Essentially, if something bad could go wrong, do you have the resources to tackle it. If not, get insurance. I would speak to one of the member organisations that your business type belongs to for more accurate advice.
