Anyone in the TA?

I'm keen to join up, having previously applied for the forces but seen the roles dry up as a result of the SDSR - however, I've recently changed jobs. It seems to me that if I go to my new employer and say "I'm applying for the TA" they could all too easily find some excuse to not continue my employment. Is this just part of the risk candidates have to take?
Lastly, what are the opportunities like for becoming an nco and / or transferring to the regulars? I want a hands on role and don't think the officer opportunities within would be available due to my age (nearly 30), but if the opportunity isn't there to advance as a non-officer then I would be better off going for the officer application route.

I believe there are laws against your employer discriminating against you due to serving in the TA. I was in it for 3 years around 15 years ago but left when I relocated due to work - it was an absolutely brilliant experience, I've fond memories of every minute of it however, employer issues aside, you need to ask yourself are you prepared to be sent to the front lines in Afghanistan as theres a good chance thats where you'll end up? When I did my service we were between wars, the first Gulf war had ended and things were fairly quiet. All change now and at 34 I would rather veg in front of the telly of an evening than man a lookout tower in camp Bastion

Simple answer is, yes. I would go to Afghan if I had too. I've had a friend come back a few limbs lighter, and it hasn't put me off...
