Can't provide work references, is that ok?

I may have to go job hunting this year and, although it's been a while since I last filled in an application, I'm guessing that I'm likely to be asked for work references.

This presents me with a problem.

I've been self employed in various capacities since around 1995, and the few companies I worked for prior to that have long since disappeared, so I don't readily have any employment/work related referees.

I don't have any hard to explain gaps in this period, and I don't have a shortage of good quality personal referees.

Is the lack of a work reference likely to be an issue?

If you've got any long term business customers from self-employment, it might be worth seeing if they can offer a reference.

As above - get some references from satisfied customers.

I'd expect to see some form of proof that you've done the work you've claimed for the periods you've claimed - that's all I use a work reference for. The above would satisfy me personally, and I've hired in both small and large organisations.

As above. Plus, if you've received any feedback or testimonials from satisfied customers or if you've undertaken any relevant CPD during that period or been part of any industry awards then that can also be used as evidence.
