6 month contract and easy or perm and hard work

I have been offered two jobs, one is a 6 month contract, close by, I know the people, good money and I can do it stood on my head. The other is 38 miles away (I'm used to commuting 55) permanent, slightly better money but will be hard work and will test my experience.
Part of me cant be arsed and fancies the easy route but being sensible I should take the perm, I don't want to end up unemployed again in 6 months.

I think you've answered your own question = perm.
It sounds like a good opportunity to push yourself, test your experience and build on your skill set. I'd suggest that - from what detail you've given - the contract role will be boring and leave you out of work whereas the perm role will help you develop and gives you the tools to grow and develop yourself... + if it turns out not to be a good role for you at least you're employed and bringing in some cash whilst you look for the next opportunity.

I think your own drive and ambition would dictate your final choice. If you're ambitious and see an opportunity for challenge and learning then you know which one that would be. If however you are not particularly ambitious, and there is nothing wrong in that, and you would prefer the low stress option, despite it not offering the longer term security, then you equally know which one to choose. You have to get up each morning and look forward to going to work; which one would allow you to do that?
Well, decision made, I have accepted the perm position. I'm now EHS Manager for MEDC (COOPER group)Its a very different industry to what I'm used too, hence why it will be a challenge. I start on the 28th so have a week to finish all the jobs I have started and not finished around the house.
