No! I just laugh at him on the inside when:
He orgets his glasses / watch / blackberry. Behaves like David Brent: "Everyone loves working for me!"
He won't give me more responsibility, instead he would rather I ask for permission to do anything....
Etc etc.
Oh, and during my appraisal when I gave him some feedback about the way he speaks to me he listened and then just said "Anything else?"

no. I have no idea how he came to be in charge of an engineering department given what I witness daily. just small things like a complete lack of basic project management; no understanding of cdm regs despite heading a £4million new build process line; no understanding of the actual process itself; and a unique ability to alienate (read completely p

old member of the extended family died a few years ago, he knew about it as had to book holiday for the funeral
had some supplier mess me around and sent them a very curt email, they moaned about it, he could have dealt with it there and then, he passed it to his boss who sent me a curt email
since then, it is a case of does he really need to know about ? usually answer is no

I have a reasonable respect for my bosses as individuals - they are mostly nice people, but collectively they don't seem to be able to run a simple business, making the same stupid mistakes every week without fail which in other profession would lead to sacking very quickly, this causes me to have little professional respect for the higher management.

Same here, My Dad can be an arse at times (quite a lot of the time in fact) but despite this anyone that can run a manufacturing company for the last 30 years and still keep afloat in this day and age has my respect.Plus i suspect there are very few people in the country that have his knowledge in the industry we are in and whilst he's an old dinosaur at times he genuinly cares for his staff and that has to count for something.

He's MD of the company and I'm Co. Director, other than ourselves we only have a part time secretary employed. As he's my Dad I know how hard he has worked and some of the close calls (heart attack which I'm sure was due to stress) and mega difficult decisions he's had in the past before I worked with him, so I can't not respect him really, soon it will be time for him to relax and let me make my own decisions as he's had his share of stress Plus i suspect there are very few people in the country that have his knowledge in the industry we are in and whilst he's an old dinosaur at times he genuinly cares for his staff and that has to count for something.
