Becoming a 'Special'

I was reading through the threads here the other day and followed a link through to the Police recruitment site, not for any particular reason, more out of interest.

However, I started reading about becoming a 'Special' and it's really pricked my interest. I've thought about joining the force before but never bitten the bullet and see this as an opportunity to find out if I really could cut it.

Is anyone here a special or have any information or thoughts on joining the force in this way? I can see there being pros and cons but it may allow me to gain more skills that can be transferred elsewhere.

A mate of mine is a special, has been for years and absolutely loves it. He once pepper sprayed a burgler, received some sort of commendation for stopping a load of angry football hooligans going into a pub to smash it up and once pissed on a drunk who had fallen asleep in a bush. He claims he didn't know the drunk was there as he was absolutely bursting to go.
