So, have been keeping an eye on the various comments about m3 prices, etc and a colleague of mine recently offered me his E90 M3 DCT saloon before he traded it in.

Although his car was a Pre-LCI model, it's got me thinking about whether the LCI Saloons will become quite a desirable used model in the future. Various factors (eg. trend towards smaller forced-induction engines, increasing size of each model, etc) mean than that the E90 M3 should be pretty special ? My thinking is that there don't seem to have been many produced, at least compared to E92 (and e93?) numbers. To be honest, I actually prefer the look of the E90 LCI Vs the coupe - I think it looks fantastic.

In a line-up that would seem to include the C63, (R)S4, [both v accompanied cars], I feel like the E90 LCI (in DCT guise for me as I love the gearbox) is a no-brainer.

Realise the saloon probably attracts a more limited audience, but I think it could be a fantastic daily driver, perfectly practical for ferrying kids around in the back, but also doubles up as the wolf in sheeps clothing for spirited weekend blasts in a more entertaining way than a c63 or equivalent Audi would be ? Will caveat the view by stating that I haven't driven a c63 for any extended period so not a qualified view.

Am I alone in thinking this ?

I bought one for those very reasons, albeit a manual. Love it and puts a huge grin on my face every time I press the loud pedal...

Thanks - I assume the manual is very slick, in true //M car style ? Drove a DCT e92 on track a while ago and thought it was v well matched to the engine.

Do you think it needs an upgraded exhaust to improve the sound ? My colleague's car had a Tubi exhaust which sounded amazing without being boomy.

Not as good as a Porsche 6MT box as the the M3 throws can feel a bit long and lost at times (I have had a 987S and 997S prior to my '11 E90 M3 6MT). Nevertheless it does the trick and didn't deter me from going down the manual route.

Exhaust is muted esp compared to a stock C63, deciding on which exhaust I guess will be subjective and personal taste etc but if you're willing to put out approx £2800 for an OEM M3 Performance exhaust it would bring up the volume a bit without being offensive.

Great car but definately needs an exhaust upgrade - I did something similar to this on mine

Cheap, simple DIY (got a mate to re-weld for £20) and all done in a weekend. It sounded superb!

Is it better? Faster etc?

The 'older' ones are really coming down in price now.

Correct. I remember discussing this with the dealer and he was pretty embarrassed about it.

"Surely the I is for Improvement or something else a bit less cringing?"
"No, honestly, it is Impulse. Can't believe it either"

Oh the Joy.

I've had my "LCI" E90 M3 saloon (Manual) for 18 months now and I absolutely love it. I specifically chose the saloon over the coupe as I personally think it looks tougher and better proportioned than the coupe. That is obviously subjective and IMHO! Check out this video review of the M3 saloon: http://skiddmark.mirocommunity.org/video/5741/driv...

Regarding the LCI, there are some significant differences. The main ones being the new iDrive system (High res screen, 40GB hard disk, USB slot, Google integration) and the rear LED light clusters.

Good luck, let us know what you decide! thumbup

CIC has 12GB hard disk not 40GB and USB was available pre LCI too.

Hey Ant smile
I should have clarified, the CIC hard disk is 40GB in size but only 12GB is available for music storage (the rest is used for Maps & software etc.)
I think the USB slot came as standard in the glove box with the CIC, whereas it was a cost option on pre LCI.

Thanks for the replies...

"Life Cycle Impulse"... Not one of BMW's better judgement calls...!

Just noticed on BMW's website that the new 3 series is being advertised... Do people think the e90 is gonna drop as more news of the new (tri-turbo?) M3 emerges ?

Tough to say, but bear in mind the next M3 won't be here until summer 2013. In this current market, thirsty cars are taking a bit of a hit in terms of residuals. But on the other hand the current M3 will be the last ever N/A M car, so that might make it more desirable!

That was my thinking. I just read that the new 4-pot turbo in the upcoming 328i is quicker than the current 335i... Incredible what they're able to do these days.

But I hear you re the NA appeal. Want my CSL back!!
