Hi,

I'm considering buying an 2006 E60 M5 with 38k on the clock. It Has full main dealer history, but no warranty.

Is it possible to buy an extended warranty on the car, even though the original has elapsed?

I've heard about the clutches failing on M5's around this kind of mileage, is that covered by the warranty or not? I've seen quite a bit on forums about dealers replacing the clutch under warranty, but it states on the BMW website that:

"The following are not covered by the BMW Approved Used Car Warranty: brake and clutch facings, discs and drums, bulbs (except Xenon), fuses, channels and guides, weather strips and seals, handles, hinges and check straps, trim upholstery, and cosmetic finishes, wheels and tyres, wipers blades and arms, glass, auxiliary drive belts, coolant and fuel hoses, the cleaning and adjustment of any component and all service items or items that will require periodic replacement. Corrosion is also not covered by
the warranty."

So that excludes the clutch surely?

Cheers,

Paul.

Just got a quote for the warranty:

£1157.98 per year with £100 excess. Is this comparable to what other people are paying?

Cheers,

Paul.

Pay £87 a month for my 2005/55 plate M6 with 34k miles. This is with zero excess.

Was that through the BMW warranty website? Can they do it cheaper if you phone customer services?

Cheers,

Paul.

The warranty cost general go up annually (E46 CSL warranties, £0 excess comp. went up ~£60 last year to this), if you take the monthly option you 'price protect' yourself.

The clutch is not covered for wear.

ETA, if the car is currently out ofwarranty upon renewal you also pay a 'lapse' premium.

I was told by Mondial here's no room for price change as BMW set the price and they only provide the service. Prices went up this year on the 1st of August so remember this when others provide their quote.

I am swingy wildly on this right now!
Just got my M5 (see earlier post) and need to decide this week if i am going to continue the warranty.
I am flipping hour on hour, some times i would rather take the hit of any maintenance that comes along, but then the risk averse side of me says i should get some cover.
Are there many E60 owners out there who don't have a warranty from BMW?

It's a tricky one. smile

My M3 CS is covered by the Mondial warranty. It's £87 a month for the fully comp, no excess cover. Now, I could just put £87 a month into a savings account and use that as the slush fund should bits and pieces need attention. However, I've taken the warranty as I believe that it represents value for money. I know it's based on "what if" scenarios, but I'm happier driving the car knowing that items that are not classed as wear and tear are covered.

If I had an E60 M5, it'd be on the BMW insured warranty in a flash, provided it qualified.

£9k I've claimed in 2 years for my M5. I'd have had to put away a £400 a month slush fund to cover that. I'm paying £86 a month with zero excess so it really is a no brainer. Car is due another trip soon I reckon.

Can't argue with that kind of logic! smile

i was in the same boat a few weeks back, had a week to decide else it became a lapsed policy and would have cost abou £1k more. I have an E61 M5 with 72k on it and bought a warranty from warranty direct all seemed fine with it....
after reading posts on here and talking to a few people i cancelled it and extended the BMW warranty for £1500 with £250 XS ,bloody expensive but good piece of mind. the WD one was about £800.
just dig in a get the mondial and be done with it.

I renewed the warranty on mine (2007, 35k miles) before it lapsed in May and the renewal premium from BMW/Mondial was a little over £600 for the comprehensive version. That seemed very reasonable. As has been said, I think it's more expensive to renew if it has lapsed.

I just bought the warranty for my E60 M5 from BMW, i was too honest and told them my mileage was 60,400 so for the Mondial warranty with £250 excess its £138 per month, it i had lied and told them i was at 59,999 the same thing would have been just £58 per month...
doh!

I'm paying £600 per year for 5,000 miles per annum with a £500 excess. That's with Classicline.

EDIT - That said, I am an old bd at nearly 40 with 10 years no claims bonus!

£980 for fully comp via Elephant (admittedly fter some succesful arm-twisting equipped with Confused Meerkat quotes that were significantly lower than my original renewal quote).

I'm a solicitor in my mid-thirties with 10+ yrs no claims which must lower the risk, but countering that (i) I have one (major) fault claim two years ago (on another policy for a different car) and (ii) the car's parked on the street in central London, both of which factors must load the policy. Excess is about £500 IIRC and mileage limited to 8k per annum. I'd also add that having my GF on the policy reduces it noticeably as well.

Fitting something like Tracker would presumably help as well. Some insurers insist on it for the M5.

30 years old, missus as named driver, £550 with Elephant fully comp and £500 excess (£500 is a magic number - always cheaper than lower or higher excesses, dont know why). 3yrs NCB, 0 claims logged, no points, car on driveway, locked gates. I play Elephant off Admiral every year as they are the same company and if they dont play ball i tell them what i want to pay and that if they dont meet it i walk away. Never failed me in 4 years with them.

First of all, BMW warranty is a no brainer in my experience (almost 8 continuous years of AUC sourced M car ownership)

Insurance, last year I paid £680 with Axa, imagine my shock when this years renewal came through last week at £490, a quote cheaper than the year before, that's a first... I almost took it, however I had a quick go on Confused this morning and have so far got it down to £395 via Swiftcover (Axa group again) I think with a bit of excess massaging I'll get it down below what my missus pays on her 1 litre C1 smile All this is at 5k PA, 10 years no claims, garaged, tracker and protected no claims.
