M3 Daily Runner???
Discussion
Just a quick one I have been offered a great deal on a new M3 and I am thinking of running one everyday, now I have had a few M3's in the past but never used one all day everyday. My question is has anybody on here used one daily and what sort of "real life" mpg did you get??
When I have owned them when I did drive it I tended to be lead footed and had poor mpg as a result!!
Thanks in advance.

Not much different to the old S54's...if that's what you had before. 16-18 around town (Dyce traffic) Considering it's a 4.0l it shows how inefficient the old S54 M3/Z4M motor is.
A bit harsh I think.I can get >35mpg easily at 65-70 on the M-way from my S54. Ok, mixed is obviously lower, but considering that's 360 bhp from a 3.2, it's an old motor and non turboed etc I don't any of the modern performance petrol lumps do much better, even the M135i.
What does the V8 do on an M-way cruise ?

Only round town do I go below 20mpg usually on a morning commute I get 24. That's 4 miles of Edinburgh city centre and 9 miles of duel carriage.I would imagine the new v8 is far thirstier with the added weight and size in engine. But the new ones did come with stop start

To answer your question I use an E92 M3 on a daily basis. I have no hesitation in recommending this to anyone.
Its used from dropping my daughter off to school to long trips at the weekend.
For the sake of comfort its probably better to get the electronic suspension as the ride on the soft setting is quite a bit better than the standard suspension.
It makes travelling on motorways very pleasant ,
I have the DCT gearbox which makes use of the engines flexibility as for the school run you can just treat it like a standard automatic and when the mood takes you , click a couple of paddles to drop a couple of gears and the car changes character.
Yes there is the compromise of the fuel MPG which is in the low 20's (on my car) but you have to remember its a 4ltre high reving V8 and not a 6 cylinder turbo diesel.

Very much a daily proposition. Over three years and about 35k miles I averaged just under 21mpg. Mine was a manual saloon and didn't have stop start, so a later car and one with DCT should do slightly better.
As a benchmark, my F10 similarly driven is about 1 mpg worse over 12,000 miles.
Are you thinking of swapping the M5 or is this another addition to your fleet?

The V8 M3 engine is actually 15kg lighter than the 3.2 six cylinder engine in the old M3.

my dad runs an E92 M3 daily, done over 50k miles in it now and is getting around 19mpg on VPower

What a lot of tosh...In terms of efficiency the S54 is miles ahead of the V8... In my Z4MC I regularly used to get 33mpg stuck at 75mph on the motorways in Belgium on the way to the Ring. Keep it below 3000rpm and the S54 can easily be in the mid 30s... In my M3 I used to seee 36/37 going across Germany and Austria sticking to the speed limits. The only way you will see fuel consumption starting with a 3 big figure in a V8 M3 is with the engine off and pushed over the edge at Beachy Head.
16 to 18mpg around town in the V8 - are you sure? My E61 M5 struggles to return more than 12. Given that the V8 is the V10 minus 2 cylinders (broadly speaking for the pedants out there) I very much doubt that...

My E92 is my daily driver. Comfortable, relaxing to drive in traffic and fun when you get a stretch of clear road. I don't commute on any motorways so A/B road and town driving and my current average is 19.7mpg.
Not sure how it's going to fare in winter, currently weighing up £1,000k for winter rubber or just get the train when it snows!

I had my E92 M3 DCT as a daily driver for 2.5yrs. Fantastic car. Could do office run, countryside run, Europe run. Anything really but track.. as I dont think it's really meant for the track with all due respect.. would need too many mods for it.. brakes, suspension.. etc etc
But for real world.. is tough tough to beat.. i have a 991 C2S now.. and dont regret changing but sometimes wonder if was really worth 50k.. but hey .. Man's math always bring me back to reason

I run an e46 M3 as my daily, in six months covered 4200miles averaging 26.9mpg. That's since buying the car. Had a genuine calculated 33.4mpg on a 400mile trip across Scotland, sub 60mph its really docile and refined. That was five up as well. And I do use the fuel spectrum from time to time as well...
Just bought some winter tyres and wheels for running on the cold period. I live in NE Scotland so experimental first time running a non 4WD, I expect it will cover most eventualities

Aberdeenshire traffic is so much more efficient! +10mpg to that for meThe 530d was only thing mpg better than the m3
