Morning all!

I recently bought an 06 plate M5, it is blk sapphire with black extended merino leather and has all the toys except soft close doors. Low mileage example at 28k. Bought from BMW AUC near M25 (not mentioning which dealer just yet). Came with 2 year warranty, 1 yrs road tax and full tank of fuel.

So, after the 'handover' from BMW, drove home (about 9 miles) and parked up - after a couple of hours I came out of my house to set up idrive options and sat nav etc, went to start car and red cog appeared frown

Plus I noticed there was a whine coming from the gearbox when the car was changing gear at low speed, and to top it all off the car had a sign on the DIS "engine oil minimum"! The very next morn I called sales exec and sent him detailed email of all the faults I picked up.

To cut to the chase, it's now been 10 days and the car has been back in the service dept, and about £4000 worth of work needs to be done to it incl clutch + fly replacement, new oil, rear brakes, software updates, etc etc. Dealer given me 320d sport touring 62 plate for the time it is in the shop.

Dealer paying for it all smile

Unfortunate in a way but good in so may. If you had used the car for a couple of months before the clutch went, YOU would be paying. I say, result!

sorry to hear this news.. not what you want when you've bought a new toy, let alone such a nice toy.

I had a similar story when I bought mine (in 2008, sold now). Firstly, I noticed that all four tyres were bald (car had only done 800 miles from new). Turns out, after I put deposit down, some jub in the workshop swapped my wheels with an older M5. Secondly, within the first couple of days my back wheels began to seize up. Turned out the diff oil was the wrong kind. This was due to mine being one of the first '07 LCI models which had a different diff (they told me), but they had used the oil for the pre LCI diff. Either way, when I'd just laid out 60k for my first M car, seeing it on a flat-bed within the first couple of days was very painful.
Again, dealer paid for everything.. and for compensation, they gave me a brand new set of wheels, the M6 kind. 4 new tyres, and changed the diff oil.

Sounds as if your dealer is utterly incompetent!

I hope you get it back in perfect condition soon. You'll enjoy it.

Well, in any case I suppose an element of luck is there as I just bought the car - and yes the service dept of the dealer I bought the car from is naff. Hence the sales exec said they'll take the car to another M specialist center. Sometimes, things are skewed even when you expect them to be perfect. As long as you as a buyer are not going to be burned with the hefty bills.

I did ask the approved used car manager whilst he was on the phone to me listing the works to be authorised whether the dealership is going to profit from the car and he replied "not after this bill has been paid". The moral of the story is to buy from an AUC garage, that way you'll be properly protected in most* cases. However, I must say BMW's customer service (from this experience) has been utterly fantastic.

As for the car....what a machine, even with these setbacks the car drove like a menace and had me dreaming about the screaming sounds of the engine. Now I have a 320D to live with until the M5 is back in my hands grumpy

I have to say you're being very philospohical about all this.

I think it is utterly shameful and shows once again just how awful some of these dealers are.

Approved Used Car?

They just cannot be serious.

The thing is though, you will have so much enjoyment from the car, especially when exploring all the different settings in the upper rev range, so I really hope this compensates a little.

There's no guarantees with an AUC - it really is up to the dealer to meet the standards of the scheme. It's worth a complaint to BMW GB that there were so many faults with the car.

My AUC experience pales in comparison to yours - my car had new front pads fitted but they left the worn-out discs in place. By the time they got done arguing about whether or not the discs were below the wear limit (they were) they ended up having to pay another dealer real money to replace the discs and the almost new pads.

Sadly AUC still means caveat emptor.

As far as the AUC scheme goes, it should be consistent - they are following the scheme and offering vehicles with the BMW stamp of approval in effect.

I think where the scheme fails is the fact that the majority of folk will buy one of these cars, not really pay attention to issues unless they are lights on the dash.

They will then take the car in at the next service and be stung for the costs.

When I buy my cars privately, I look over them with a fine toothcomb - something that is very tough on an AUC car (in my experience!)

I guess everyone has had some sort of experience, good or bad, however in this instance it's been great.

Yes, the dealer could have washed their hands from the car once it was off their forecourt but they didn't. I cant say why, even though I did question the dealer managers sanity for paying over £2k for all the work and running the sale of the car into a loss. I even offered to hand the car back so they could send it to auction, they said it was up to me but their main concern was to make sure I had a car I was happy with. Standards may have just changed..?

Keeping in mind, I have owned BMW's for the last decade and my previous experience with an E46 Coupe via BMW Servicing was frustrating (subframe issue). Nonetheless BMW UK eventually offered a 50 per cent contribution to the repairs even though it was out of warranty by a long shot.

I'll be collecting my car tomorrow from the service center and they've even agreed to change the diff and gearbox oil as well as give my next service FOC, followed by preferential/half price labour rates for the time I own the car - all because of the hassle I've had. Quite frankly I cant argue with that, even if other dealers are crappy, in this instance the service by this particular dealer has been fantastic. I guess when it's good: count your blessings.

I was very close to buying a 30k E60 M5 as well but heard too many horror stories about the single clutch gearbox... shame though as they are brilliant cars but the gearbox is definitely the Achilles heel. Good job its all covered and you got nice new car to potter around in the mean time smile

The gearbox is fine - it's the clutch (or release bearing / pump) that is the issue.

Do it! as soon as you tickle that accelerator it makes everything worth while, and with a warranty you only need worry about consumables.

^^^ exactly. Nothing wrong with the gearboxes in these cars. Get a warrantied one and its win win!

There's a red low mileage minter on PH but to be honest I don't think its my cuppa tea... especially with that interior combo :P

Anyone reckon the F10 M5 will drop to sub 40k price range next year?

Agreed! Its a well known fact a main dealer selling AUC will steer you away from being picky and conducting a detailed inspection. Its much easier to do this with an Indy or even more so with a car selling privately. A good seller will be more than happy for you to have a good dig around as if its a good car it will prove itself very quickly.

Just puts me off buying an E60 M5 even more ! I'm at the point now where after 4yrs with my E39 M5 its time for a change but stories like this are putting me right off even though you will be much better off in the long run with a new clutch etc but what would of happened if this had happened 2 or 3 months into ownership and the dealership refused to sort the issues you would be going through so much hassle trying to get them to pay for eveything.
The main issue for me is that you are really tied to the BMW network when you have an E60 M5, nobody seems to want these cars once the mileage creeps up on them and you can't get a warranty on them. I'm tempted to keep my E39 and install the Evolve S/Charger.

Get some more pic's up once you get the car back and cleaned up, good luck with her, i just love the noise of the V10 !!
