E39 M5 mirror covered under warranty?
Discussion
That's an old post, if you manage to get them to respond, let alone relace you are a better man than me.
I sent mine to the States for a repair. Only cost £100 or so and turnaround was quick.
You have got to be careful that the liquid doesn't start leaking from the unit, as it's corrosive and yiou will be replacing a lot of interior trim as well!

From that thread.
This is my first post to the forum, and I am hope it will be useful to others. Since I have gain a lot of useful information myself from everyone, it is my turn to share some knowledge. Regarding the BMW M5 E39 rearview mirrors, I myself had issue during CPO with the electrochromatic fluid dripping out of the mirror. Unfortunately, as with others, BMW refused to cover the part. After searching the web I found that the mirrors are manufactured by Magna Donnelly, and their Acura TL line of mirrors were also having the same issue. http://tl.acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78... 61&page=2&pp=25. Now it seems there are some concerns on the toxicity of this fluid, I personally did not want to inhale any of the vapors, so I tried to drive with windows open while I had the defective mirror. Also, the fluid will damage any plastic it cost in contact with.
Well, anyways, I contact Dani Andriacchi, through email and she was very helpful in getting me the necessary forms to request a free replacement. Her email address was Dani.Andriacchi@magnadon.com. The replacement came from Germany and took about 3-4weeks. You uninstall the old mirror and install the new mirror, and return the old mirror in the original box with prepaid postage. It was a brand new mirror. It has all the original functionality and would be indistinguishable from the original, except, it must have a different material for dimming. Since my original mirror had a green tinge when dimming and this one is now purplish. I assume it is their new pseudo solid electronichromatic material versus the older liquid.
Obviously Magna Donnely is taking care of the issue for customer, even if BMW will not
Be interesting to see if this applies all those years on!

It is a main dealer, AUC, probably because it was such a good car or perhaps because it was taken in Part-ex against one of their others in the shop and due to the quality of the car they deceided to put it through the books?
fair enough! the price of AUC'ing a car goes up exponentially the older it gets, so although possible it rarely happens! An AUC warranty for a 5 year old car costs near enough £1000 to the dealer which is why most of them won't risk selling old cars unless they're really great examples (and have a very healthy margin to cover anything)... so take that as a compliment!

As a quick solution whilst I sort the mirror out, does anyone know if a standard 5 series mirror will mount as a temporary fix? I don't need the auto dim function just the mirror to mount to the windscreen.
Thanks
Yes it should fit with no problems. I have seen a few early E39 M5 with the square mirror so some may have even come with that type from new. Thanks

Do you specifically know the AUC warranty cost on the M5 for a 5 year old car is £1k+,or is that any 5 year old car?
Reason I ask is that I bought a 7 year old 4.4X5 as an AUC last April - the first year cost was £300 and a second year was another £500.
