Hey everyone, my first post so go easy if possible!

I'm wanting to get one of my dream cars - an e63 M6 and have done quite a bit of research on the car but want some more expert opinions. I've currently got a modfied e46 with a lot of sound system equipment etc. which makes the fuel economy suck so I won't be too bothered about the M6's MPG and the fact I live in London and commute to work, just want the car as a weekend thing to be honest.

I know about the main issues that I've read here and other places such as clutch and service intervals etc. but I'm 99% positive that I'll be getting it as an AUC at the dealer. Warranty is obviously a must but for those with much more knowledge than me how much is this in the UK and what type? What else to look for? Just how good is this car and for the prices I've seen lately (seen a couple around 30k mark for £20,000 at the dealer's which for what the car is, is very good for the money IMO).

I'm also young (25) and never bought anything via a dealer (always been private) so I would be very grateful for some advice on how to get the best deal/best car to look for. My budget is £23k max.

Thanks so much in advance for any advice that comes my way.

Somebody asked the same question last week so there should be a post on the next page or so.
I have one for a couple of years, faultless. It is phenomenally fast. Flicking through the gears in the highest SMG settings, up near 8k on the HUD, is one of the best motoring experiences I've ever had.
Engine is absolutely bullet proof. The clutch will need a change around the 45k mark for most - though plenty seem to keep going longer.
Don't drive it -ever- in manual, they shouldn't have included an auto option, it clearly wasn't designed to be used and it gives the 'box a far worse name than it deserves.

I think he means don't drive ever in auto...
I would suggest only ever drive in manual setting 5 actually.
I have had mine for 18 months and had the M5 before that for 3 years and would say just buy it, it's one of the world's great cars.

I have the E60 M5 and cant recomend it enough even after 1.5years... Id actually have an M6 if I didnt need 5 seats.

Only drive in manual mode... I ALWAYS use M mode with gearbox setting 5, its really nice imo.

Warranty will be 1.5-2k from what I have read, I dont have a warranty on my car and have done 25k without any issues... brakes and tyres wear and are expensive, very easy to change the front brakes yourself but get OEM.

yes there are people who have been unlucky and had huge issues / large warranty claims, but not all these cars spend their life in the garage which is what reading forums would suggest... for your budget you should be able to get a low mileage example which makes the warranty cheaper.

I used to have 3k of stereo gear in my M3 (now stripped out so it could become a track mule) and the M5 stereo is actually very very good for an OEM system.

The M6 will feel like a missile after your M3... enjoy smile

I have an M5. I love the SMG.

I have the BMW warranty @ £90/m with £100 excess as it has under 60k miles. Price doubles (ish) after 60k.
If you're looking at 30k cars, try negotiate a 2 year warranty from the dealer as part of the sale. You'll get 1 year anyway. Unless you do crazy mileage on the weekends you'll still be under the 60k at the end and be able to go onto the BMW warranty at a normal price.

I have had the clutch swapped on mine paid for by the warranty.

One bit of advice I'd give is don't always be fooled into thinking an AUC car is the best option. Dealers are commanding 2-4k over what private examples are being advertised for and I don't see the justification. If a private seller has maintained their car well then there shouldn't be any apparent issues. Then stick a mondial warranty on it which covers you against any catastrophic failures. Works out far cheaper financially than paying over the odds at a dealership, particularly if its a low mileage example - only £90 per month on the mondial scheme. BMW can't even guarantee clutch and flywheel repair under warranty either and I've come to notice prep work on AUC cars at quite a few dealers had been shoddy to say the least!

I agree with Owren...

If you can find a good private example that already has a mondial warranty on it, you could save a good few quid. You can transfer the warranty over (within 2 weeks of the previous owner cancelling) and it is cheaper than if you are starting a new warranty.

I did this a couple of months ago and my warranty is £65 a month, with a £250 excess.

I wish the warranty covered tyres, I put a new set of Pilot Supersports on it 15 miles ago and have a nail in one already :-( . The first sunny day in weeks and the car is off the road awaiting delivery of a new tyre. Amazing car though...

Even if the car doesn't have a current warranty on it, a Mondial warranty can be processed almost immediately. I think I'm right in thinking no inspection/FBMWSH is necessary for the Mondial scheme??
If a low mileage example is what your after, there are a few nice private examples that have gone on in the past week. Check their history/condition, and if all stacks up, stick a Mondial on it for £90 per month. Happy motoring!

You're right, you don't need a warranty to start one. I just meant it worked out cheaper by picking up where the previous owner's warranty left off.

The online quote was something like £80 a month for a new warranty whereas it was £65 a month by carrying on the previous owners.

If you're buying from AUC then you don't need to worry much about the car.
I don't know how many NCBs you have but if you find it difficult to insure the car,
ask the dealer if he can offer you a good insurance deal.
I've saved mine from 18k to just under 6k.

If possible, ask for 2 year AUC warranty. Some dealerships do promotion like that but depends on the dealership.
Don't push too hard but if you ask for some favours they will consider to a certain level.
(My previous 6er came with nothing but full valet, the battery for some reason went flat and died, which is not covered under warranty, but they decided to change it for me free of charge)
A friend of mine had AUC M5, his clutch was slipping (had its life) after driving 2,000 miles since he bought it.
Dealership decided to change it for him at free of charge.

Good luck

Sorry to go off OT... but you're saying you pay £6k for insurance? Fecking hell!
