Hi all just had my E39 M5 gearbox oil changed, but this morning I found difficulty finding gears until it had warmed up for about 10 mins or so. Is this normal after gearbox oil change. Please advise

No, new oil should improve the change. Has the correct oil been used?

Your not kidding man. I have just read not to use non BMW approved oils in Getrag boxes because they were devolped with the Castrol oil. So probably my fault for trying Royal Purple.

The BMW specified oil for the M5 is MTF-LT-2, this superceeds MTF-LT-1. Hope you get it sorted.

Thank you Helix. I have to say when it warmed up it was soooo smooth but the warm up period was a pain. There was no crunching noises or anything just really notchy. I'm going to instruct them to put the M5 BMW recommended tried and trusted oil in to be on the safe side. And damn the experiments

I put RP in my M3 when i had it and had no problems but i have heard of this before on the E39 M5, would only ever use the original castrol in the M5. Post up to let us know if it makes any difference.

Simon.

Hi Simon. The garage are looking into this morning from a cold start. If they cannot come up for a reason I will be asking them to put Castrol in then post the results in the forum
thanks Simon

Hi just had my phone call from the garage. Not good they agree the gears are notchy when cold but normal after warm up. They suggest oil from BMW dealership but at a cost of £163. £50 of which is labour. Hmmm what to do I'm just asking the question is the gearbox being damaged whilst it warms up.
thank you Sembi

How long have you owned this car? I've had 2 E39 M5's and both had "notchy" gear changes until warmed. Characteristic of that 'box?

Gearbox- LTF-2 or RP Syncromax

Diff LSD only oil- Castrol 75 140

75-90 is for non LSD diffs and won't work anywhere on your car.
