I would love to know what was under his bonnet?.... He held be back on a bypass when I wanted to get around we got upto about 40mph then he just set off!!! I kept up but that was it there was no way I could overtake and we got up to well over a tonne...

Thing is although I expected to pass him no problem I think he was suprised I could keep up, I went on my way with my tail between my legs ha ha - whats the world coming to?

I'v been out in a Starlet GT turbo, which left lots of Impreza's/ Evo's behind easily, their very lightweight cars (Aprox 900 kilos), and can be made to run around 230bhp without too much difficulty. Ridiculously quick things.

My MK3 MR2 is about the same weight and I had it at 235bhp with the higher boost turbo on. I don't think it would have kept up with an M3 though. It was fast but not that fast. Besides over a ton in a starlet? He would have been in deep **** if he had to slam on the brakes. The M3 will be better balanced and capable at those speeds. The starlet if its anything like the mr2 will be trying to take off lol.

This one had some right power, i was flat out in 3rd then started pushing 4th and could not get past on a duel carrageway..... so i think this 1 must have been pushing 300bhp i've read that it is possible!

If you were in 3rd at 40mph against a turbo'd even lessor powered car would easily pull away.. All the power in the s54 engine is high up the rev range. I'd guess the same drag in the right gear say 6k rpm may change things..

No mate I was sat in 2nd waiting for him to go...the reason I mentioned 3rd flat out is because that would usually see most cars off and i was trying to make the point that the little begger had some serious top end power. it was really wet yesterday like but i have had the car over 4 year so i know its limits and to be fair i got some decent traction

Ive had a couple, they are no where near an M3 performance wise (Also had a couple of them) However they are very tunable and with over 200bhp in a car that size they sre quick. Get near a ton and you would leave it though :-)

The problem I have with modern M cars is that they weigh far too much & nothing scuppers performance more than weight my old Z4M was too lardy & my current E92 M3 suffers from the same problem...not an issue for the starlet & it seemed to prove it, that's what I loved most about my Cerbera decent power & relatively low weight, it makes all the difference.

It's funny isn't it! I had the same happen to me in a 911 against a corsa on the M1, I had to chuckle.

Yep sounds familiar. Came across a clio in my M3, had steel wheels on and all. I overtook and next thing it was on my bumper, nailed it in third only to watch him overtake me while I was right in the power band. Found him further down the road getting fuel, it was a Clio 172 engine pushing nearly 400bhp!

There are some very normal looking cars out there that cost peanuts to buy but can be tuned very easily. Cars that either modify their engine or drop something special in. Real Q car esque, pleanty of Corsa's out there that would muller even an F10 M5 down the 1/4. But at the end of the day, they are still not the M.
