The car says it needs a litre of oil, but its still in its running in period (M3 at 1000miles) before the running in service.

Can anyone confirm if 10w60 should go in or do they use a different oil before the 1200mile service?

Definitely not, the running in oil is thinner, not sure exactly, but I think it maybe 0w 30 or 5w 30. Hop over to M3 Cutters forum and someone will know for sure.

I've asked on M3 cutters and one person thinks its 0w30 but can't confirm. I was pretty sure a different oil goes in but there's nothing in the handbook.

0w30 came in the boot when I picked the car up but bmw assist said 10w60. The dealers haven't got a clue and said to call the parts dept in the morning.

I didn't want to bank on the stuff in the boot being right as its not unknown for the dealers to make mistakes!

Ring up BMW UK and ring several BMW Dealers and see whether they all give same answer or not ?

If they do go with that
If they don't then research further or go with majority decision

I would be slightly worried if your M3 went through a litre of oil during the first 1000 miles, where presumably you have been taking it easy.

How close are you to the first oil service?

My thoughts exactly....I have not heard of any owners losing oil before its running in service.

Get the dealer to collect the thing and take a look. After all its got three years of warranty!

After a lot of ringing about. It's seems elms in Cambridge were the most confident in what they were saying.

They spoke to their master technician who confirmed the running in oil is different to bed in the piston rings etc. but that the best thing to do is put half a litre of 10w60 in now. The car is on 1000 miles and will have its service in 2 days (about 40miles) time.

They did not think the oil usage was particularly out of the ordinary.

I'll see how the usage goes after the service.
