Folks,

Wrestling with buying an e39 m5 - possibly an e60

In performance terms, how does the b5 compare?

Any. Experience here?

Cheers

More torque, better gearbox, higher top speed, more tactile brakes and a better exhaust noise and thats about it re performance. There is so much more though regarding Alpina's knowledge of damping, cornering and build quality along with their interiors.

If I were in the market for an E60 M5 I would like to try an Alpina B5 too. Think it would make for a better day to day proposition (relaxed auto gearbox and better MPG/range).

I agree but that sounds like a compromise.
The m5s had none at all
And I'd always wonder which would have been better...
I may have to try them both .....gutted.....

The M5 is a comfortable but uncompromising car. To get the best out of one you need to drive it quickly which in the UK is just not possible. The Alpina is a luxury car more GT than sporting but properly quick all of the time, exclusive and relaxing anytime even when pressing on. Hidden depths in Buchloe.
