E46 M3 what look out, sub frame, cross member etc?

Contemplating buying an early 2001-2002 E46 M3 SMG to mainly use on track, yes I know manual is more pure but I like the SMG and thing it adds character.
What to look out for? I've heard some have bigger issues regarding sub frame and/or cross member, what is this and how can one tell if it's needed?
Owned a CSL some years ago so have a rough idea what to check but would like to know more on sub frame and/or cross member issue plus any other issues to look out for please?
