BMW E60 M5 - YC55YNP - Sandal Wakefield.
Discussion
I had a test drive of this car yesterday and really enjoyed it. It also felt rock solid and pulled like a train.
However, as all prospective M5 V10 buyers - I am aware of such things as the massive running costs as well as items such as the gearbox costing a fortune to replace.
Is anyone familiar with this car? I understand that it is an AUC car but that doesn't mean it does not have a hidden past. At 77,000 miles I am interested to know what warranty work has been done on this car previously.
I am trying to negotiate a 2 year warranty as some sort of concession on this car but they seem quite adamant that the 1 year deal is the best they can offer. Any tips on how to haggle harder? And what others can I get thrown in as part of a concession package?
Bearing in mind that it is an early model E60 M5, high mileage and £5,000 priced higher than equivalent non AUC cars I believe I am right to have these fears as well as making some sort of concessionary demand from the dealership.

I would not class this car as a high mileage vehicle, for its age it is anything but, averages less than 10k per annum which is fine.
I would play hard ball on the warranty, I got 2 years on mine and am aware from what I read on PH many others have managed to secure the same, it seems to be more common to achieve this now so stick to your guns. If you say it is a possible deal breaker and threaten to walk I think they will blink first.
With regard history, that is an easy check they can do for you, simple case of inputting details and hey presto back comes the service and warranty history.
The one major thing to check is the clutch & flywheel, these tend to go anywhere between 45k & 70k miles as a rule. If it has had a full replacement not only will that give you peace of mind but is a £3/£4k bill you will not have to face. If not replaced that gives you some ammunition to possibly drive a harder bargain.
Everybody will ask this same question on any E60/61 of this age and mileage and will look for that to have been done, it really does make a huge difference as to how the deal shapes up.
Good luck in your negotiation and do keep us posted as to how this develops and turns out.

Shadow, thanks for tips.
I've put my terms to them, I am adamant on the 24 month warranty really as well as making sure it is worth the paper it is written on so there is no wriggle out clause on their behalf. As you say, it is my deal breaker and I am very happy to walk away and it would be their (sales) loss. The ball is in their court now so to speak.
If anyone knows of this car, please feel free to share the info, it all helps!

2 year AUC is well within their haggling remit. When were the brake discs and pads last done? There's another grand or so there. Normally discs last ~30K. What about bushes/front suspension?
At that age I'd want a list of everything done to the car and factor in things that look likely to need doing in the next year or so.

I've got a list of the things done under warranty:
4000 miles - £96.90 gearbox sensor
48,000 miles - £2215.04 flywheel and clutch replacement
49,000 - £4289.04 near gearbox
73,000 - £2200 new differential
Is this common? Should I be concerned? Sounds like the car has been driven hard by its previous owner and he got stung fairly hard (items 2, 3 and 4 were all outside of warranty) though BMW oontributed towards the warranty work. I hope the car is not a lemon and I've managed to negotiate a 2 year warranty...however....something still does not feel right. I can't put my finger on it.

As someone once said not driving a car hard is like not having sex with your girlfriend so she is in better condition for her next boyfriend...
I would suspect any M5 has had a bit of a kicking through its life and needing a clutch at 48k sounds bang on the money, I've seen reports of people getting through them in 20k! The diffs do seem to go on some cars but I suppose that can be down to maintenance or lack of when it comes to diff oil changing etc.
The way you must look at it is that you have got a car with a 2 year warranty, that's had a clutch 30k ago (although its probably not a million miles of needing that again, depending on your driving style and how many miles you do a year etc) and a diff that was replaced 4k ago (should be ok for another 70k or so at least judging by the first one!)

Personally I would not be concerned at all, in-fact quite the opposite in that most/all the major issues that are or can be problematical have been done.
I would prefer to see these items having been done as it is reasonably common for them to fail, it does not necessarily fit that because these have been done the car has been driven hard by previous owners. These are common issues on these models.
I would actually be more prepared and happier to buy the car knowing these items have been rectified than if not as I would be thinking just round the corner a shed load of expense is coming my way.
You have managed to blag the extra years warranty which is great, I think you now have huge peace of mind knowing that a majority of the potential large expenses that could be waiting for you at some stage have either been done or more than likely covered by the very comprehensive warranty (one that is actually worth the paper it is written on).
These are not cheap cars to run and maintain which you clearly know and is not your issue/concern. What you are, quite rightly, trying to avoid are nasty surprises just round the corner. You can never fully protect yourself but with the work already done plus your two year warranty you have as a much peace of mind as anyone is ever likely to get.
If something is still bugging you then only you know best and walking away is maybe the correct thing to do as you need to be sure. But going on the 'fears' and 'thoughts' you raise in your post my honest opinion is you can put them to bed as the history you have uncovered would put me at ease and make the car a more attractive proposition.
Hope this helps.

Well it looks like my hesitation cost me. Someone placed a deposit on the car literally 30 mins before me.
I took a sensible approach to my first BMW M car purchase, made sure it was minimum risk for me whilst having as many bases covered as possible. For some reason that's why I'm not dissapointed, I think I used my head rather than my heart in this matter. I think I'll adopt the same approach next time (maybe Christmas time or so when they're chasing annual sales targets and offering large concessions) so I don't believe I lost out, rather I'll look at it as a learning experience.

Hi there, it was me, sorry for pipping you to the post!! I must have test drove it b4 you yesterday. I went yesterday not with any intention of buying as i thought the car was slightly overpriced even for a main dealer car, and the mileage was higher than i wanted...but the car was just fantastic in every single way. If drives like new and the engine is so tight! It looks immaculate too! I am very anal on a cars history but also on exterior and interior condition, and for a 7/8 yr old car i was just blown away! Stunning...Full leather, bluetooth, logic 7, comfort access, full functional adaptive seats, tv, alcantara headling, privacy glass and many more optional extras on top....fantastic spec. Recntly serviced, new discs on rear, nothing needed for ages according to i-drive...I walked away yesterday with the intention of viewing another today, which i did. Less miles on clock, not as good a spec, no warranty, and overall condition of the car was not a patch on this one. My mind was made up provided i could negotiate a 2yr warranty, and money off, which i did. Result. Well happy, and cant wait to collect next week. Good luck as your search continues.

Fantastic dude. You bought yourself an amazing car. I was blown away by it too, it was tight as a drum and pulled like a train. The stickler for me was the 2 year warranty and negotiating a better finance deal so I could run the car through my business. I still think I took the right approach in being conservative in my approach as I did not want to get stung on any future repair work.Edited by Maxket on Friday 26th July 22:58
That aside, congratulations again....it was probably the best M5 considering the overall package within a 250 mile radius. Amazing car and one very lucky owner. I wish you all the best and hope you enjoy it and drive it like it should be driven!

Thank you for those kind words, am glad you agreed with me, it is a fantastic example and i am sure you will be as successful if you bide your time. Be good to hear of your success as and when it happens!! That aside, congratulations again....it was probably the best M5 considering the overall package within a 250 mile radius. With approved used cars like this, what kind of movement can you negotiate on the price with BMW?
I pushed for a 2 year warranty and a lower APR rate so I could run it through my business. It also needed road tax too which I believe they were going to contribute towards. I didnt really haggle mega hard on the price as I wanter other concessions. The new owner may have gotten a different or better discount package than me though.
I figured they must have had aroud £3,000-5000 in that car so I pushed for what I could have outside a discounted price (to me the extra warranty was worth far more).
Thoughts on this - the first e60 m5 i've seen under £10k. Is the "engine rattle" scary or a known issue?
