Normally sits about 70 ish. Tonight, not driven in a week due to being at sea....went out for a wee hoon (ahem ) the night and my temp shot way up to 100...came down when I backed off. Normal?

Entirely normal.

Driving normally, i.e. not redlining, the temp will fluctuate between about 70-80. As soon as you start working the engine and the gears, the needle will climb to 90-100. Motorway driving even at high speeds at relatively constant revs and it will drop down a bit. The hot weather will have undoubtedly had an impact.

I know it is not the same but I have an e36 328 track car with a lower temperature stat fitted, on normal driving it sits around 1/3 of the way up the gauge. On track it gets to just over half way, even in the winter!

I don't think you have a problem, but keep an eye out for any long term changes in temperature trends obviously.

On oil temperature gauge 90-100c is nominal operating temperature, so fine.

You don't want to exceed 120-125c though!

Water temp guauge should always be halfway!
