Had the 1st proper trip in her this weekend as was visiting friends in Cardiff.

So far i'm extremely impressed with the car (more than i expected). Still having to take it easy as i can't really open her up until the 1200 mile service has been completed.

Traction is much better than i'd hoped, no doubt some of this down to her wearing MPSS from the factory which i'm sure helps, however i had a full on tank slapper in the Tunnel near St David's Hotel which very nearly caught me out. The road was damp in places but i feel some other fluid may have been present as the loss of traction was at over 80mph with WOT in 3rd. The power & torque are relentless with exceptional pull in every gear right through the rev range, so am looking forward to exploring that more post 1st service.

Economy to date with motorway & several (quite a few) blats into 3 figures is around the 27mpg mark (did the West Lancs to Cardiff journey on less than a full tank of fuel). On a run being sensible i'd see 30 which will be over 50% of my journey's so i'm really pleased with that. Blown away by the Jeckyll & Hyde with this car, it can cruise beautifully with decent mpg when required, but press one of the M buttons & the car ignites into a fire breathing monstersmile

The connected drive is ace, as are the other toys. Not got my Harman Kardon set up just right yet as not used to altering an old school Graphic Equaliser. Got a 64GB USB 3.0 stick on order as decided to put a full range of my music in the car & 16GB just isn't enough (love how intuitive the music search functions are).

Seats are super comfy & even my 6 month pregnant wife reckons they're more comfortable than my outgoing Audi A8.

Cruise Control tool a bit of getting used to as having driven Audi's for quite some time, the M5 system is very different using just the steering wheel as the Audi's is a stalk.

Looking forward to my next journey which will be a 500 mile round trip next week.

A couple of questions though?

1. Does the LCi model have the synthesised worst/engine note played into the cabin as i couldn't hear it? I could hear the rumbles, pops & bangs through tunnels with my window down (sounded amazing), but i can't say i heard the false stuff.
2. I noticed on the SatNav that a few of the POI icons (only spotted fuel & hotels) had little plus symbols in the top right of the icon, however others of the same type didn't.

I'm stunned by your MPG W8MPC, very impressive. I can't get 30mpg on a run in mine, with 27mpg being about the max and my average on mixed driving is around 22-24mpg.

As for the fake sound, yes your car will have this which, as you say you can't hear it, kind of proves that the bad reputation the 'symposer' has is largely from people who haven't actually heard it and simply don't like the idea of it. In reality, as you've found, it is very subtle and quite similar to the real sound of the car. There is no obvious sound coming out of the speakers and I actually think BMW have done quite well with it (although you still can't really hear the pops and bangs inside the car, but that's more to do with the amount of sound insulation!). It's similar in my girlfriends imminent M135i, where the symposer is equally as subtle and in my opinion, sounds really good - you'd never know it was fake if you didn't 'know'! Like I said, all the negativity appears to be internet myth rom people (mainly in PH) who have no real experience of it.

Now, as for your second question, I too would like to know what those little plus symbols on certain POI's are, because I also can't work out what they are. It looks like they should expand into something but having gone into the interactive map and hovered over them, I cant seem to make them do anything.

I have done 8,750 miles in my M5 now and the average MPG since new is 21.9mpg, I saw the best mpg on the drive back from collecting the car new.......!

On longer journeys I occasionally see 25mpg, but daily commute (about 20 miles) I will often see under 20. But having come for a Maserati GTS where I was lucky to see 16mpg its still very good and the M5 is so much quicker than the Maser.....

Can't help you on the POI question?

I'm pre 1200 mile service so even when playing i didn't go over 6k rpm so didn't rag the car. Motorway was cruise set at 80mph & at that speed 30mpg is no problem, but only just. Average since picking the car up is 27.6mpg.

That raises another question, does the M5 have 2 trip computers as per on Audi's? I liked the fact i could have an overall total for trip figures as well as a separate trip per trip (if that makes sense). On Audi's it was Trip 1 (sort of instant/current figures) & Trip 2 being overall since the last reset.

I'd love to know where the piped engine/zorst noise comes from as i had the Stereo off for most of the journey & could only hear a faint burble which sounded as though it emanated from the rear. I like the fact that on a cruise the cabin is quiet but when choosing to set the car into attack mode things get louder. Did a few tunnel runs & the sound outside is fantasticsmile

Got another long drive next week so will see how the figures alter after that, although it will be a 500 mile motorway journey so hoping for high 20's to low 30's againsmile

I think its all about restraint! Even on longer journeys I find I am getting really good figures, then I find a nice stretch of road and all my good work it very quickly wasted....

There is two journey computers on the M5, on mine one is set to record averages since I collected the car, the other is set to automatically reset after each journey...

Where are they set up? Can only find the constant average which mine is displaying.

On mine which is pre-LCI you can select the journey computer by going to spilt screen options journey computer or by pressing menu and selecting vehicle information when you select journey computer just press the options button to select reset every journey.

(From memory so could be a few steps out, but you get the gist....)

I'd double-check that it's compatible with the manual. I imagine they've updated the software in the car since the E60, but my E61 M5's USB port won't read a 64GB stick, and is dog slow at reading a 32GB stick.

Will look into that but does it defo provide 2 trip systems as per Audi? I had a feeling that just reset & thus you lose the constant (if that makes sense)smile

I'm with you there. The Wife is extremely happy with my choice & having a "sensible" car for 2 years helped pave the way for something more excitingsmile It's a win win for me & that never happens.

That's a good point but i'm hoping as you say that the new software will allow it. I know my GT-R could take a 64GB stick & i'd hope the M5 is a little more refined. Worst case i'll drop back to a 32GB if required as that's probably enough.

Yeah I know how you feel. Don't really expect the car to get so out if shape I guess the brutal power overwhelms the TC etc

Got to love it though :-))

What made you change from the GT-R, out of interest?

Sold the GT-R two years ago as my journey mix changed & I was doing 500 mile motorway hacks every 2 weeks. As awesome as the GT-R was, it wasn't the best long distance cruiser as liked to be driven hardsmile Also the draw of several track days took the toll on my walletfrown

Needed to take some time out of insane motoring costs so took a new A8 for a couple of years. Now 2yrs on i need some additional poke & giggles so hunted for a suitable car that provided the right balance of luxury saloon for long journeys & performance saloon for giggles. Also needed a car that was exceptional value so the new M5 was the only car that provided the correct balancesmile
