E60 m5.... Steering column won't adjust?

I bought a 55 plate m5 and bought it knowing that the steering column adjustment is not working

It's not a major issue as the wheel is stuck in a reasonable position, but I want to the car perfect and am wondering if this is a problem anyone else has encountered, and if so what was the solution?

Many thanks David....very kind of you to dig out all those links......looks like there's many possible reasons for this....will have to run through them and see if I can find a solution
