My old man has finally, after 5 years, decided to get rid of his trusty M3 and replace it with a Sakhir Orange M6. Plenty of nice options including the full leather (including the dashboard), B&O stereo as well as a few others like soft close doors and the usual M6 stuff.
To be honest, I'm not sure what to think of it. I've driven the M3 loads of times now and it never fails to put a smile on my face, the new M6.....I'm just not convinced it'll drive as nicely. Sure, it'll be quicker in a line but will it make you smile as much? Hmmmm
Still, will be nice to experience it. He was going to get it this Tuesday coming but they called him saying it's ready tomorrow morning! He's rather excited. Maybe it's a little sad, but I'm going to quite miss the M3.

I think its always hard to part with a car that has behaved impeccably. I found it hard to part with mine when I sold it in September. That new M6 is beautiful though and I love that colour from when I sat in one at Munich last year.
Bet he's up early in the morning, good luck to him and congrats.

Good luck to him and I'm sure the M6 will be wonderful
The M6 may not be an M3, but the M3 may not be an M6. They both have a lot to offer and are equally enjoyable, but perhaps in different ways.
Not sure how old your dad is but I'm 50 and having moved from a 997 to a 335i (DCT) and as of last Friday an F1 M5 within the last 12 months, personally the M5 is way ahead of the 335i and so much better than the 911. Some would argue not, but that's what makes life exciting - we're all different.
Go into the M6 with an open mind and you may just be surprised!

Having owned both, and now with an M6 CP, I can almost guarantee that you will not find the M6 as much fun. Quite simply, it's not as sharp to drive, doesn't sound as good and it feels very big. The gap is even greater if you're comparing a non-Competition Pack or pre-14MY where the steering is decidedly more lethargic (I had one before my CP and the steering difference in particular is considerable). The M3 and M6 are two totally different cars and can't really be compared.
On the flip side, if you were to compare performance (be that speed, braking or even the bendy type, as it'll go round a bend as fast as an M3, it just doesn't feel as good doing so), refinement, build quality, interior ambience, aesthetics (subjective, I know....but the M6 looks immediately more special on the road than an M3), the M6 is simply in another league. Theres typically £40k separating the cost of these cars new, and you can feel where the extra spend went.
But it's not as much fun, so if that's where your priorities lie then it's unlikely to impress you as much as it should. Personally, I wanted a fast and sport-orientated GT. And in that respect, the M6 is probably one of the very best of it's type (shhhh....most people don't know that!).

Just saw it for the last time this morning
Just got a text from him saying he took the long route to work to take it for one last spin. It's perhaps a bit sad but I'll really miss that car, had some cracking times in it and the engine is nothing short of an absolute masterpiece. Still, I do like my GT cars as well so it'll be interesting to see what the M6 is like. I've been in a V10 M6 and loved the engine but, noise-wise, the new one doesn't seem to cut it for me.

Well, having been out in it and driven it for a while I'd agree with what has already been said.
Definitely a nicer place to sit and the B&O stereo is simply the best audio system i've ever experienced in a car, by a long way. It's much quieter than the M3 on the motorway but it's still not as quiet as my 10 year old 7 series. It's more comfortable than the M3 too and it's just a nicer place to spend time.
But.....the M3 sounds MUCH, MUCH better when giving it some and the engine is so much more exciting in the M3. The M6, if anything, feels slower than the M3 until you look at the numbers on the dash and realise that, yes, the M6 is certainly quicker......now as a GT car this is kind of what you want - effortless cruising and not tiring at all.
Which would I pick.....hmmmm, tough call. Depends on priorities as has been said. For excitement there's no comparison, as a GT car, daily comfort etc etc the M6 is in another league.
For the record the M3 was reasonably well specced but had a few options missing but all the main ones there, the M6 is very highly specced and was £110k new.

I do like the M6, it just doesn't put a big grin on my face like the M3 did. No denying it's an absolutely mega car though.

In a similar vein, if someone offered me a free swap, I don't think I'd give up the m3, but would love to have the m6 too for long journeys and cranking the music up on the way to work.

Crikey....£110k new and without Ceramics or Competition Pack - it must literally have every other option going! I totally agree with you on the engine sound - it's one thing thats really annoying me as it tends to sound like video game! I didn't think it that bad at first but when you've had the last few years used to AMG's or Jag's latest offerings (equally fantastic sounding in their own unique ways), this simply sounds sh!t.
I'm surprised that it's noticeably noisier than your 7 series because I thought it was pretty quiet (I'd expect it to have more road noise than the 7er though). All I can say is that at it's 169mph (limited
) vmax, it's the quietest car I've had by some margin. To really experience what this car has to offer, you and your dad must take it to the continent at some point....it really comes into it's own there

It's not MUCH noisier than the 7 series, far from it. on a smooth bit of road there is nothing between them. it's just tyre/road noise over rougher surfaces and over concrete sections of MWay etc where the 7er gets ahead.
It's a lovely, lovely car the M6 i was just expecting more from the thrills department. The noise is the single most disappointing thing about it IMO. My dad doesn't seem to mind although when someone asked him does he prefer this or the old ones noise he replied "well this is a bit deeper" as opposed to "yes".....
The M3 noise is in another league IMO, as it is for thrills. the M6 is an epic, epic GT car though it really is. He's over the moon with it and loves the ride (still, my 7er is more comfy but it's a bit more like a boat

I think the M6 could be described as a victim of its own success.
Matt
Perhaps, it's an extremely competent car. As you pointed out last night, it's a really nice place to spend time it just doesn't have the thrill factor I was expecting. That said, the more time I spend in it now I'm beginning to "get it" more now. Taken a while (which the M3 didn't) but it's a cracking car the M6.Matt
remember.... "yeah, it's really easy to get the back end out if you aren't caref...oh s
t, like that"
As fantastic a car as it is, it's simply not won me over. I really want to love it but I can only appreciate what a great car it is, but I can't love it
Just doesn't have the x-factor I'd have expected from an M car. Whilst it's much quieter I think the quality and tone of noise in my old barge is better. The M6 simply just doesn't excite me. I miss the M3. My dad asked if I wanted to go for a spin in it tonight and said I could drive it again if I wanted. I decided to stay in and watch a film.
The M3 had an absolute masterpiece of an engine, and it's sorely, sorely missed

Is it one of of those things that 'you cant put your finger on' with regards to really bonding with it? When I test drove one in September the dealer asked me if I liked it and I said "it just feels like a 6 series". Ok I didnt spank it but I never bonded with it either.
On the other hand when I test drove an M5 v10 in July I literally dreamed about it for over a week. It really got under my skin wheras the new gen cars do not.

Nail on the head. It's just, dare I say, a bit dull. On the other hand when I test drove an M5 v10 in July I literally dreamed about it for over a week. It really got under my skin wheras the new gen cars do not.

Should be 4wd for what it is.

The last M6 was much more exciting, probably because it had a cracker of an engine.
