I did it. The e46 is great, but the v10 in the e60 is epic. If you're interested in the toys, then the later models (2009 MY+ I think) had the HDD nav/media system.

Had an E60 M5 for 18 months, and it is quite a machine. Engine and exhaust note make the car special, it also handles exceptionally for a car of its size. Drawbacks for me were the extremely poor mpg coupled with thimble sized fuel tank. Got boring filling up the car every 180 miles. The SMG box was epic when you drove it like you stole it, but a complete pig around town in auto mode. I ended up driving it in flappy paddle mode all the time, made things smoother.

I have an E46 M3 as my weekend car (manual box) and I can safely say if I had to pick between the two I would take the E46 all day long. The car is fast, sounds great, handles brilliantly and is fairly economical to run if you care about mpg. I change my cars a fair bit, the only car I have had in the last 10 years that I can see myself keeping for a long time (>2yrs for me) is my E46 M3.

yes i did M3 CS to V10 M5. M5 is a nice car but running costs are on another frequency....

depends on what you want to spend on a car if you can afford an C63 AMG, that would be my choice....
