F10 M5 - attention from other road users
Discussion
Collected my Singapore grey car on Saturday. Loving the colour. Understated but brings out the lines really well and gives it a hint of menace. Will post up a pic when I get the chance.
Genuinely surprised to see the amount of attention the car has had. Had a chap on the A4 craning his head backwards out of the driver's window to get a better look. A couple of thumbs up, and someone at a petrol station giving it the once over. I didn't think they were that rare, especially in the South East but people seem to love it.

I collected my Singapore grey on March 1st. The attention I've received so far has been somewhat negative in that almost daily I've had somebody - all males - trying to perform a crazy overtakes often leading to me having to take defensive action.
I've had passengers comment to me that it's almost as if people feel they have to prove themselves when they see the M5 badge.

Five months in and I'm amazed by the amount of negativity I get from other road users. After years in Porsches this has come as an unpleasant surprise.
Serious petrolheads appreciate the car so you do get noticed but I think the issue is for the majority of the population you are just someone in a 'big BMW'
I keep waving at other F10 M5s by the way (South Manchester/Cheshire) but still not a single response!

I've noticed a similar thing in my M6. Others stare....point.....slow down....try to race and do other stupid things.
On Saturday I was with my daughter on the M62 heading back to Huddersfield driving in the slow lane when some mug in a Seat Leon FR overtook me and then cut back across me to take his exit. He ended up kicking little stones at the front of my car resulting in two stone chips bang smack centre in my windscreen.
Result = new windscreen needed and £75 down.
If I wanted to race your s
tty 2.0 I would have smacked you into the middle of next week but if I ignore you it means I am not interested in being a knob especially when I have my 4 year old with me.

But have been surprised at how many positive reactions there have been - more people have actually engaged in conversation about the car when parked or in petrol stations (and are genuinely interested in what its like) than any other car I have owned.

The most attention I get tends to be from other BMW drivers, who are hell bent on trying to show that spending £1000's less can still give you similar performance - it's usually some dick in a 335i or a Z4. After leaving them for dead, they soon back off and decide not to give up their day jobs as hairdressers.

Completely agree with this, have had my car since Summer 2012 and have passed may other F10 M5s over this time including garages close up etc..always give a thumbs up to a fellow M5 owner and have never had so much as an acknowledgment back. Otherwise generally thumbs up response form other BMW boy racers or fellow pistonhead type hot hatch car drivers in the know otherwise I think car completely passes under the radar.HoHoHo said:
I get three reactions:
Most people have no idea what the car is (and that's fine by me)
Those who do give a thumbs up and a smile
I never get any boyracers trying to give it a go as I suspect they are aware what a monster it is.

Although I have had a couple of photo / video moments which feels very unsettling!

Very nice colour that, no 20" wheels?.
WHY?.
I prefer road cars to have suppleness and a bit of roll. Smaller wheels mean better mid-corner adjustment by throttle alone, less mechanical grip (which I think is important for a more enjoyable drive at sane speeds), better ride quality and cheaper tyres! Also personally I find big wheels aesthetically overpowering, but I may be in a minority of one on that point...WHY?.

I'm in that camp too and hence avoided the 20 inch wheelsGassing Station | M Power | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
