chaps

i have been toying with the idea of putting my e39 m5 up for sale for about a month now. i could do with freeing up some cash for a house move, but i am not sure what sort of price i should ask for the m5.

pictures are here:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

the car would have a full detail and mot before being sold. it's a year 2000, carbon black, red leather, milltek catback. its on 101k and had a full service in january this year. has a full service history with plenty of receipts to back it up. unfortunately it has a small amount of rust inside the filler cap, and some stone chips on the front bumper. also some of the silver interior trim has tarnished from the sun. i think thats about all of the niggles.

i have had a look in the classifieds and on auto trader. the prices range dramatically, so i'm really not too sure. i am swaying towards the £7.5k mark, but a second opinion would be great.

As you say there is a big variation in prices of E39 M5s which reflects the big variation in condition.

Your car looks nice, but looks can be deceiving in relatively low res pictures!

The car looks a bit of a mixture between facelift (front and rear lights) and pre-facelift (wheel and gear lever). I'd assume it'a a pre-facelift with upgraded lights if looking to buy, is this the case? It's also a pretty basic spec, no Nav, but then at least you have a CD player by the looks of it and not a tape!

The value will depend a lot on the work (and receipts to back it up) that's been done recently. At 101K it could be a car that's had a lot of work done (suspension refresh, clutch, etc.) or one that's had nothing done and about to require it!

The amount of rust in hidden places will also be important, have you checked inside the jacking points? Rut here is a common problem and can be bad enough to make all but the most dedicated enthusiast walk away at almost any price.

The value could be anywhere between £5K and maybe £12K (even more if it's spotless, rust free and had all the major bits replaced recently) depending on the above. Black and Red is one of the best combinations IMO.

For me it would come down to suspension & brakes.

If one isn't handy and uses a reputably indy the cost of 4 discs, pads, handbrake, dampers and bushes could be a 2k+ job.

If they've been done over the last year or three I reckon 7-8k is about right, if not I would think its a 6.5k car.

Quite fancy it myself wink

What suspension work would you expect to have been done ?

As I said, depends on the price. On a 7.5-8k+ E39 M5 with over 100k on it I'd like to see that the dampers has been replaced, springs were in good order, thrust arms done, bushes refreshed, ball joints are all good etc. As for brakes - decent meat on the discs, not bothered about pads, perhaps a caliper rebuild.

I've had an E39 M5 before, one of 4 E39s I've owned. They're superb but big, heavy and fast. Suspension and brakes suffer. A lot. And they're not cheap.

Start at £8k and go from there.

I reckon you will end up with 7k in your pocket.

With one noticeable exception on AT they seem to start at 6 and a half?

£6.5k does seem to be the selling point for these cars for owners who really want to sell them. By 'these cars' I mean ones that have seen use, got some miles & a few battle scars but fundamentally sound.

As you suggest, price ranges vary dramatically. I've got mine listed on eBay, PistonHeads and a few forums for £5995. I'd suggest my colour combination is probably less desirable than yours and it's pre-facelift. On the other hand, I've done a bit of suspension work and am including the parts bar top mounts, dampers and springs to do a near complete suspension refresh.

I think it is very difficult to gauge a true value for E39 M5s as there are a lot of people who have put them for sale hoping the market has moved upwards and are happy to keep them if they don't sell; I know I won't be particularly upset if I end up keeping mine. There also just aren't very many for sale, so finding something comparable ends up being difficult. I'm not sure about £6.5k being the bottom of the market though, I think the very bottom for an MOTed car is more like £4.5k. Of course, I'm happy for someone to tell me otherwise and pay me £6.5k for mine. smile

Its the age old argument isn't it? What a car is up for sale at isn't often what they sell at. Mine was up at £6000 in June last year. I gave £5450 for it.

I got the full asking price for mine in October last year but I didn't advertise the car for sale I PM'd someone that was looking for one with spec & price. It worked out well for me as the guy that bought it is real enthusiast like myself and is really enjoying the M5.

What someone else said on here is correct in my case that if the buyer wasn't paying what I wanted for the car then I would have just held onto it as good ones are hard to find.

Oh I agree with that. I mean 6.5k seems to be the number that piques interest for an older E39 M5 that's seen some miles.

Completely agree with that as well. Mine isn't the best example, but nor is it the worst. Its not leggy (15 years old and 119k miles) and just sailed through the MOT without even an advisory. It has a few faults that I will rectify and I am bringing it up to face lift spec, save for a few things. I won't be selling it for some time and hope that when I do, it'll be seen as one of the better examples with all the work I will have done to it

Feeling really tempted by these at the moment. Am I correct in thinking £10-12k should buy me a very good one?

If anyone's selling... ears

You shouldn't even need to pay that much

Yup. Around 11k will get you something pretty damned special out of a private sale.
