I've enjoyed the E30 M3, but I think I'm going to move her on now. great little car, but time to move on.
So, lets ignore cost and running costs, would you buy an E46 M3 or an E90 M3? The car will be used for about 2-5K miles a year, a bit of fun.

If you're going to track it, probably the e46.

Personally I prefer the looks and the engine of the e90 as a fast road car.

Not planning on tracking , been there with a bit of motorsport and trackdays in a high power caterham, after that, pretty much all saloons feel a bit cumbersome on track.
The CSL is a thought, although at the moment the prices for them seem a bit bonkers, and I really don't like the smg box.
The 46 seems a bit more raw than the 92, but they are getting on a bit now. Thing is the 92 is a bit too civilised for a bit of fun in the garage?? BUt then, a 4.0l V8 is always going to be fun!!

If it's fast road then a 997 of any variety is your friend, if it must be a BMW then you already have the best one biggrin

why would you sell a car that's started rising in value and isn't hard to maintain?

I sold my E30 a couple of years ago. Had I waited till now I could have probably got a hell of a lot more. Instead, I spent 12 months regretting it and a further 12 searching for another.

If your mind is made up though, I think an E46 in Laguna Seca is a lovely thing. A CSL would be nice, but as you say prices are high.

Yes it's apparently going up in value, but people aren't biting my hand off at the moment to buy it! Mind you, that might be down to the fact that I haven't as yet advertised it ! hehe
I enjoy it in short bursts, but I can't drive it for too long as it's uncomfortable for me.
Anyway, always good to try things, enjoy them and then try something else.
I do like the thought of a CSL, but as I mentioned , I don't like the old SMG box
I have even thought of a masserati grand tourismo.
I must admit to wanting a bit more firepower under the bonnet, sad and shallow I know, but I need to own another multi cylinder petrol, before they are outlawed! frown

if comfort matters to you, just buy an E39 M5 while keeping the E30, if you don't have enough money(although they are dirt cheap now) just work harder smile

Lol smile E39 does look a bit of fun. I remember driving my fathers on many occasions. Sounded like a NASCAR ! Brilliant. Could be tempted !

Apart from an E28 the E39 M5 would be my choice. I'd have to liberate a bit more induction noise though and possibly an exhaust that was only louder when I wanted it to be. They seem like incredible value.

I too thought CSL for you right away.

It has that bit more firepower that you mention, along with a chassis to match. Also a more modern car.

I'd suggest now is a good time to buy one too.

I heed your comments on the SMG.
