I have just bought a M3 e46 and have this intermittent problem where the DSC light and hand break light come on, it sometimes clear itself when I turn off the engine then might not appear for a few days I'm trying yo upload a photo but not very successfully
Any ideas on this guys ?

Cheers Ady

Faulty brake wear / wheel rotation sensor would be my guess - or the wires to the sensor breaking up, sometimes making good contact and sometimes not.

The symptoms (the handbrake light doubles as the brake warning light) and dtc/dsc warning are exactly the same as I recently had on my 130i. Sorted with £30 of replacement sensors and an hour's labour.

As Gruber says it is more than likely a fault with a brake wear sensor, you often cannot see anything wrong but it is cheap enough to renew them.

On my 1999 car you can reset the light by switching the ignition on and waiting a minute before you start your engine.
