Russ Fellows Exhaust - E39 M5
Discussion
Since buying my M5 I've always craved a little more character from the exhaust. After looking at numerous options I thought I'd settled on a Hayward & Scott, after some a little research I soon changed my mind.
A few weeks later, BMW5 member 'e60530i' pops up a post regard a new exhaust he's had fitted by Russ Fellows. After seeing the quality of his work and speaking to him it soon became clear that I'd be sending my business his way
he really is a top bloke.
Anyway, after discussing my options I went along with his recommendation and before I knew it I had the exhaust in my grubby little mitts!
Russ likes to send you a 'teaser' photo before he posts it out

As I'm in middle of a house move, all of my tools are in storage so I enlisted a friend to fit the exhaust at his garage. A few hours later the exhaust is fitted without issue.
Please find a few pics below, but do excuse the dirty car, I've been too busy driving it to have had time to have cleaned it

As you can see, the quality is fantastic, as is the fit and finish.
On to the thing everybody is interested, a video
M5 Exhaust Vid
Windows Movie Maker has loss some of the depth from the audio but that's all I have. Connect some speaks to your laptop/computer for better range of sound
The exhaust note has definately improved since fitting as it was initially quite quiet, i've probably put 60 miles on since fitting and now i'd say the sound and volume is pefect.
All in all, a bargain for £620 delivered, I'm over the moon

Sounds great on the vid and not too mental.
Mine had a muffler delete from Style Dynamics when I got my M5 last year which sounded fabulous but droned badly enough to give me a headache at motorway speeds. Eventually took it off and fitted the original back boxes which makes the Beast more muted and entirely satisfactory at sustained 70mph+ .....however, I do miss that sophisticated V8 rasp/rumble though when going on and off the power.
What are Russ's boxes like at motorway speeds? Any drone or strange resonance?
Are the boxes just dummy boxes or do they contain baffles etc.? (I know some other well known aftermarket manufacturers don't put much in the way of sound moderating material in their boxes.)
The price seems good!
Any issues fitting them to original exhaust system?

They're quite well behaved when not at WOT, there is an increase in volume at high load, low revs but only when you're really labouring the engine such as being in 6th rather than 5th which I try to avoid. The boxes are fully functioning, that's one of the reasons why I didn't buy the H&S as I didn't want to be paying for a fake box.
No fitting issues, went on pretty easily it just takes a bit of time to get the cut in the right place when using an original centre section.
Cheers,
Martyn
