Just picked up my car (e63 M6) from an oil service at a BMW main dealer.

I was in a bit of a rush so didn't pay close attention to the invoice.

I had a closer look when I got home and it lists "Shell Helix Ultra Extra 0W-30" as the oil used.

Does anyone know if BMW have changed the approved oil or anything for the V10 M5/M6?

I'm pretty sure all M engines use Castrol 10w60

With the exception of the 1M

That was my thinking also... Certainly the owners manual doesn't list the grade they have used

Should be running TWS (10W60).

I dont recall my handbook mentioning it either...

But there was a sticker on the engine stating the type of oil to use.

I think further research has shown that 0w30 or 0w40 performs just as good as 10w60 if not better. Certainly on m5board some American owners recommend it over 10w60 edge/tws.

I personally stick to 10w60 though.

Spoke to them today and they said it was a clerical error when the invoice was being printed, the service card said 10W-60. Im awaiting confirmation in writing that this was the case though...

Hi mate, exactly the same thing happened with me and my M6. I wrote to BMW uk, this was their reply

Thank you for your online enquiry dated May 30, 2014. I am sorry to learn of your anxieties regarding the grade of oil used in your BMW at its latest service at Stephen James Enfield. I can certainly understand your concerns, especially as your Owner's Handbook states to use different oil grades altogether.

Although appointed to represent BMW UK, Stephen James Enfield is an independent business. As such, the staff there are ultimately responsible for resolving any customer issues relating to the services that they have provided.

With the above in mind, I have contacted Mr Dean Agass, Workshop Controller at the dealership, to obtain further information. Mr Agass advised me that the oil used at this service was Castrol TWS Motorsport 10W-60. I can confirm that this is the oil that is recommended for use with your BMW M6 Coupe. Mr Agass stated that the invoice reads that the grade of oil 0W-30 was inputted due to an error in their system being unable to discount the rate of the Motorsport oil actually used. He was apologetic for any confusion this may have caused you.

In order to ensure that you are fully confident with the service that has been completed, I have requested that Mr Agass contact you in order to explain this matter in more detail. I trust that you will hear from him in the near future.

Thank you for contacting BMW UK. I trust that this information is reassuring to you. Should you require my attention in the future, please do not hesitate to contact me.
