Hi guys, I've been quoted a ridiculous sum for the Vorsteiner carbon front lip/rear diffuser from Scuderia Systems - they want over 2 grand EACH for the items! Vorsteiner america have quoted less, but I'm not clued up as to the import duty/taxes that would be payable if I was to have them sent over. Anyone have any idea? the total sum in dollars is $3890 which equates to about £2450.

Thanks

Ask them if they are able to mark it up as a gift....

I am tempted by a front and rear splitter for my f10 m5, however the costs being quoted are horrific.

You could try a UK-US importing company who will be able to give you a quote for the shipping and any customs issues. The benefit is that Scuderia deliver it to a US address and if they are creative can avoid import duties altogether.

Hi,

Deliberately marking items as a 'gift' in order to avoid taxes/customs is illegal and I doubt Vorsteiner would do this sort of thing as a risk to being shut down and prosecuted etc.

All items coming into the UK are subject to VAT and Customs duties. The rates can and do vary depending on what the item is. On Car styling parts, VAT will definitely be at 20% and the import duties won't likely be zero or very low rated.

You can look on the HMRC website to see which catagory it would come under and the rate of duty it attracts. I tend to use a 'general' approximation of 10%.

So, $3890 USD and assuming that price includes the shipping to you in the UK

$3890 is the value on the paperwork. Depending on how it's broken down in terms of the indicated value of the item with the remainder being the shipping, I'll assume $3500 is the cost of the item.

$3500 is currently around £2166. The remaining $400 or so is around £248. Duty at 'perhaps' 10% will be added to the £2166 amount, taking it to £2382. VAT at 20% will take it to £2859. The shipping amount will then have VAT added, taking it to £297. £2859 is then added to the £297 amount (yes, you get charged VAT twice!) making £3156. You'll then have customs clearance/handling charges applied and I'd say that'd be perhaps £30? or so. Total to you would be around £3200 landed in the UK at your door.

The exact calculation will vary to the amount of import duty levied and whatever the clearance charges added are.

Vorsteiner products are known to be very high quality and production techniques and methods as well as materials used etc are all high end. Fitment as a result is fantastic which then satisfies many owners who want the best fit possible etc.

If you aren't as 'OCD' as that, then as mentioned, Teddy at SSDD does do some of the better fitting replica type items and if not already, then very soon I'd expect him to be offering styling choices for the latest M and BMW cars.

Cheers, Dennis!
