E60. Drove a touring today. Nice. Not amazing, thought it would be quicker...
Were you in the correct mode? i.e. P500S, S6 etc. And revved it to the redline?Could also be the fact that the seating position is pretty high and the cabin is refined so you don't get the illusion of speed...
The S85 V10 has so little torque low down the rev band that you wonder what the fuss is all about. I remember when I first drove an E60 and I genuinely thought my Passat 1.9 Tdi with 90 BHP was quicker low down (it probably was as it picked up from virtually 1200rpm).
Then the sales man took me on a longer stretch of road, told me to go down to third gear and floor it and it just took off like a rocket. We were into 3 figures VERY quickly.
The S85 is like a giant VTEC engine; it comes alive after 4,000rpm - just when other cars run out of steam and need an up shift. You can almost hear the 'cam step' as it goes over 4,000rpm and starts pulling like a train. Mega engine.
However, low down you would be wondering what all the fuss is all about.

Definitely don't NEED anything faster.
I guess the thing I was looking for was mid range like my old GTRs. they certainly come alive above 4-5k. And sound awesome.
Simple forced vs. not scenario.I guess the thing I was looking for was mid range like my old GTRs. they certainly come alive above 4-5k. And sound awesome.
I had an R35 GT-R & off the line it was epic & my F10 even with more power would not get away as quick. That said once rolling the F10 comes into it's own. Same to a degree applies to the E60 although you need to be far higher in the rev range to make it work. Personally the F10 M5 is an amazing piece of machinery as it does everything so well.

Agreed. My C5 RS6 feels faster off the line but the M5 feels faster at the top end.I had an R35 GT-R & off the line it was epic & my F10 even with more power would not get away as quick. Worth taking a drive in a B5 then. I guess the thing I was looking for was mid range ... sound awesome.
Oh, hang on!

I know he has one, the game moves on a lot from E39 B10 to E60 B5 though, with a roughly 50% increase in both power and torque from ~350 to ~500 of both. Lots more "mid-rangey" than the V10 M5 as that seems to be what he's looking for.
