Hi.... I was looking at buying an F13 640d, and then began wondering if better just to stretch to the M6, given they seem to be available in the mid-£50s now.

Has anyone considered the 650i as an alternative to the M6 ? If my initial Internet research is right, seems to have c440-450hp, plenty fast for road use. If I wasn't planning to track the car, is it worth considering ? Presume depreciation worse than a well-bought //M equivalent ?

Any thoughts out there ?

Apologies if already covered on another thread. I did a search but couldn't find a similar thread on here.

I think this will follow the standard rule of what type of car you ultimately want. The 650 is a very fast GT, but the M6 will be more sharply set-up and have oodles more power.

Also, if you go for the 650, you might always wonder what life would have been like with the M6 instead.

Having owned the F10 550i M Sport, then the F10 LCI M5, I would say running costs about the same, but power miles apart.
I now have a new M6 GC Comp Pack, another step up.

BUT you just can not use these cars to anything like there potential , they are just too fast.

I would say the 640 GC D M Sport would be a good choice IF you don't need/want metal power.

Thanks. Agree with both your comments. We've had a pre-LCI M5 before, was incredible.

If a 650i was available say c.£40k, I wonder if it makes sense (for me) vs an M6 at c£55k ? Logic is that it has plenty of power for my every day. I'll never be a good enough driver to extract more than 5/10ths of the M6.

Totally accept the M6 will feel materially better. But is the 650i 70% as good ?

My only slight concern is that most people want either a 640d or the M6. So the market place for the 650i is v narrow, so difficult to sell when the time comes to move on...

I sold my F10 550i MS to a guy abroad.
Only 3 in the UK at the time.

For me though if you really want a 650i you should buy it and enjoy it and revel in the fact you have a great rare motor and just don't worry about the fact it might be difficult to sell on, just enjoy it while you have it.

My old 4.8iS was difficult to move on(read I lost a fortune on it and it was old at the time anyway!) but I enjoyed its rarity and it was what I really wanted at the time.

Yeah personally I wouldn't be buying any expensive, large-petrol-engined non-M BMWs.... simply because I had an E63 645i and it was a stunning bit of kit, but the depreciation it had suffered was eye-watering.

Lucky for me, as I bought it after said depreciation. It is a shame as they are fantastic cars. I really like the look of the new 6, but can't quite wrap my head around the enormous weight increase.

Yeah - I guess my point is that I'm happy an M6 or a 650i, as they both tick the boxes for me.

Just wondering if the M6 is the more logical choice as easier to sell on and potentially less depreciation ? But point well made, thanks!

Buy an M6, take it to Germany, red line it in 3rd, 4th and maybe 5th / 6th.

The noise above 5k rpm is awesome, pop to the ring too....

I hear you. The M6 is great.

I guess the other alternative is to consider an M5. Anyone have reservations about buying an early 2011 car ?

I thought a similar thing about the 650i. I think running costs would be a lot less than the M6, and if you got it on a decent pcp then depreciation isn't an issue. Aren't they even quoted at 30+ mpg?

I just came across it on the website, doesn't seem to be much info or press noise, but seems to be a completely new engine.

Would be interested to get feedback from someone that has driven both

Best I could get on a run from the F10 M Sport 550i was 28 MPG and that was miss daisy driving, not much in it TBH, my LCI M5 returned 24/5 MPG with some blasting. Mostly out of town work though on both.

Is the LCI much more efficient than the original ?

My F13 M6 averages 19 - 20mpg but do a lot of short trips. Best i got was a 180 mile trip on the A1. As it was busy i set cruise control to 85 and got 28mpg

If you mean better than the E60, yes it is.

Surely depreciation is factored into the PCP?

The gearboxes are very different in the two cars. The ZF eight speed in the 650i is a dream, really smooth and never caught out. The DCT, if it's anything like the one in my M4, is very good but if you do a lot of city driving then you can't revel in constant max throttle upshifts...and it can be clunky on occasion...i had the zf in my 640d and i do miss it.

Sorry, meant the pre-LCI... Just wondering if worth paying a premium for the LCI model...
