Are these going to rise over the next few years?
Will there be many cars that will still be in warranty or be able to be warranted by Mondial?
If.You bought one without a warranty, would you make sure you had a decent amount of money put aside for repairs?
I'm in two minds about one, but it will be a few years before I can buy one. I need that V10 in my life

Just get one, forget about all the scaremongering
Every performance car will come with expensive repair bills, if you let paranoia set in then you'll never own a Porsche, Merc AMG, Maserati, Aston, etc.
When you look at what else is out there, what 500bhp car can you get for £15k?

Well you say that but prices for decent examples have stayed pretty much flat for the last couple of years, and if anything they've gone up. The leggy ones are the ones which have been dropping. When you look at what else is out there, what 500bhp car can you get for £15k?

But its not scaremongering is it
How many people have you heard of who've been paying thousands of pounds of repair bills out of their own pocket? If you're not under warranty then you surely you'd take it to an indy for repairs, the huge bills you hear of are main dealer prices done under warranty.
And have you seen the servicing prices of other 500bhp cars? Bentley will shaft you for £1-2k a year just for changing the oil and filters. Buy a good example and an E60 M5 is cheap to run in comparison to its peers.
A guy on the other E60 M5 thread running at the moment tried to get a Mondial warranty on this...

....and failed:
"Fascinating to read the thread on this car, as I was a whisker away from buying it. It is a genuinely lovely car in the metal but the excellent contributors who clearly know their stuff have hit the nail on the head.. no Mondial Warranty, no dice. This particular car flagged up as unwarrantable when I gave Mondial the VIN. Shame. I would dispute the issue with price though - easy to say its expensive when you are not buying but try finding a cheaper car at anywhere near the miles."
You need big balls and deep pockets to run these particular cars. I have to agree though that the engine in those things is a big, big plus and would have a huge multiplier effect when it came to the man maths.
Warranty or bork fund? My E39 M5 had an official BMW warranty on it when I bought it at 78k miles last year. Renewal would have been through Mondial and they wanted just shy of £2k per year in premiums. I decided on running a bork fund instead. Repairs on the more analogue E39 M are probably not as mind-blowingly expensive (crossed fingers/touching wood) as on the E60 M so maybe a warranty would be the way to go...if you can get one.
There'll be very good reasons why reputable warranty companies won't touch somewhat older E60 Ms, even those with modest circa 50k mileages.

Just ran my own E39 M5 (82k miles) through the BMW/Mondial on-line warranty system and they now want £3069 per year in premiums.
Entered the details for a random E60 M5 on eBay (2005 & 89k miles) and it came up with exactly the same premium.....£3069.
Interesting.
So warranties are possible on E60 Ms (and E39 iteration) but bloody expensive.
(I am left with a hollow pit of the stomach feeling)
I remember reading about people saying not to run an e39 without a warranty reading back a few years. That is quite amusing looking back given even things like the VANOS can be sorted for manageable numbers.
I'm not sure about the e60 given its complexity though, what do we think in 5 years time?

I don't know the details but I guess the guy either entered the details of the car incorrectly into the BMW/Mondial on-line system? Maybe it didn't appear on their database for some reason?? Have a look at the other thread about E60 M5 that's running right now for more on this. Also, but from memory, BMW/Mondial had a filter that appeared to exclude vehicles not originally registered new in the UK & cars that had been tracked etc. - hazy memory though.
Seems clear now that relatively elderly E60 M5s are accepted by Mondial/BMW (possibly with conditions) but at enormous cost.

How would they know a car's been tracked?
Taking out the warranty on a car over 60k miles is madness IMO, especially when the quoted price probably comes with a £250 excess. Also it would be very unlikely that you'd be able to claim a clutch change under warranty now.

Once BMW indy garages become more skilled/experienced/faster/better value at fixing the clutch issues the general hysteria surrounding these vehicles should die down. I'm not sure about the e60 given its complexity though, what do we think in 5 years time?
(Will almost certainly still need an indy to do the clutch though. The E39 M5 clutch can be changed by a local garage with high technical competence; doubt that will ever be the case with the E60 M5. However, there are several other E39 issues that only a good indy can be trusted with.)

Tracked - Self disclosure on the on-line application system: a little box to tick...or not.

Warranty on 60k miles car: I agree, madness. The excess on both vehicles I put through the BMW/Mondial application was only £100.

What are you talking about man, I think you have put 2 and 2 together and made 64. Another car was referred to earlier in the thread that someone could not get a warranty on. I know this because I owned the car now at 911Virgin until Saturday morning last week and have been paying for fully comprehensive Mondial warranty on it since the AUC warranty ran out in October 2012.http://www.911virgin.com/porscheforsale/915/BMWM5S...

It has had both throttle actuators and the vanos line done under warranty earlier this year.
If anyone goes to look at the car I left the details of the warranty with it, infact its paid for the next month.
Incredible how a good honest car is made a rogue by people with no knowledge of it whatsoever.

My logic if your looking to buy one of these you have already done some homework. I absolutely love mine. Its the closest thing to ticking all the boxes and giving me the same joy my TVR gave me. I have the e63 M6.
Buy correct, BMW history and a Warranty and you won't go wrong in my eyes. These will be the ones that hold the value. I have a folder with all receipts, MOTs in order etc. I plan to keep for the day i may part with the beast.

Based on what?I bought my M5 3 years ago and paid 15k and there were a lot at this money at the time... Looking at prices now the same car spec and mileage would be same money.
The car does have a reputation and when things go wrong it's expensive... But almost all cars with comparable performance cost serious when things go wrong.... The mechanics are very strong, it's the bloody electronics that failures are common and silly money, I've got a water damaged ecu in mine due to an independent leaving the fuse box cover off and it's proving a nightmare to fix.
